I bought the witcher 2, and couldnt get into it. I bought skyrim and fell in love instantly. the beginning draws you in nicely. One complaint is i love the VATS system in fallout and I wish bethesda implemented a sort of VATS system for skyrim but its by no means a deal breaker.

People said Oblivion was a great game, I didn't like it at all. I'm staying away from Skyrim.

Skyrim a great RPG. And it is certainly one of the best out there. Fallout New Vegas beats the hell out of it though - complexity, role-play, deep character customizations, traits, reputation systems with more than a dozen factions. Compared, Skyrim seems very...shallow.

I couldn't really get into Skyrim all that much but it isn't a bad game by any means. I prefer Mass Effect personally but I need to get round to playing The Witcher and maybe even some JRPGs since so many people seem to go on about them all the time.

Naw, the Dragon Age and Mass Effect series both put quality over quantity compared to the Elder scrolls games, IMO.

This.

I've always enjoyed Bethesda's stuff, but to me the open-world thing gets old after awhile. There are better RPGs out there: Tales of Vesperia, Valkyria Chronicles, Mass Effect, Demon's Souls, Dark Souls, Xenoblade...

If I want a first-person quasi-RPG, I prefer one with a fun loot system (Borderlands) to keep me going.

I like Skyrim. Put about 150 hours into it, did just about everything. Still planning another character playthrough in the future. But there are better RPG's out there. The Tales games if you like them. I've enjoyed my time with Dark Souls more. Mass Effect games were fun, but they feel more like third-person action games than anything else now. (EA:evil: )

It would have been nice if you get XP from completing quests.

Not for me, I need a good story, good characters, and a leveling/combat system that isn't broken. Big, beautiful world but I need to be given more reason to explore it other than just to look at it and Skyrim didn't do that for me.
VATS in Skyrim would ruin it.NintendoGamer3
^ Combat was broken enough already, there is no need to break it further, Also Bethesda was pretty lazy with the VATS system, the animations would get old as quickly as they did in Fallout 3 and NV.

I'd take all those over Skyrim and also add in Fallout New Vegas, The Witcher, and The Witcher 2 and a lot of RPGs that have come out on the DS, PSP, and Persona 3 and 4 for the PS2 that have come out since the current generation started.

That's not really what I meant. I meant more of getting xp for turning a quest in, like you did in Fallout and every other rpg.

I think Dark Souls is the best RPG this gen. Skyrim is awesome, though. I've played it for around 40 hours but I keep getting distracted by other games.

I guess when i think of what makes a good Role Playing Game, i think of whether it conveys the feeling that my character is evolving because of my specific actions. I like dark souls, but i cant play it the way i want to, i feel shoe horned into playing it like everyone else. And i find it hard to care about JRPGs these days. Skyrim is so seemless that i forget im even playing a game. For a grungy cynical old gamer like me thats worth its weight.

I thought Skyrim was vary shallow and short of content. The main story was terrible and incrediably short, as were all the faction quest lines. The world itself suffered from a repetitive landscape. Oblivion was the better game given the time of its release.

Skyrim is one of the bests not the best. You mentioned The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings and I fully believe it's unfair to compare them, they are so diffrent and both are great experiences.

Things dont have to be similar to compare them, thats why you do... What would be the point of comparing Skyrim to Skyrim? :P

I think The Witcher 2 is superior in every possible way, from the combat, to the graphics, and to the story.

Yes, Skyrim is truly a triumph for gaming. A real work of art by any standard. I think a VATS system would have absolutely no place in Skyrim though. The VATS system worked well in Fallout because the original had a similar, almost turn-based, combat styled system. So yah... Skyrim, good. VATS, good. VATS in Skyrim? Not good.

on second thought, i think the fallout games are a tad better lol. skyrim just feels a little bit underachieving, like i complete a quest and all that happens is a COMPLETED sign.
