So my cousin today told me that he has 3 red lights whenever he plays GTA IV on his xbox 360 and he thinks its because of his HDD because he plays like 15 mins and then the 3 red lights appear , he tried to play without the HDD and it worked amazingly fine with no problems so here are my questions.

1 - if you havnt played the xbox for nearly a week , does this cause damage to your HDD for not turning it on and leaving it off for long? [ i ask this because i have my 120 GB hidden under my desk for months...because i dont have the money to shell for a memory card , yes memories are expensive where i live ]

2 - does he have to clear the cache?

3 - is it his xbox or his HDD and is there anyway to fix this sort of problem?

Thank you for your time guys. :)

If the xbox works fine without the HDD i think that must be the problem. And BTW if you call MS for red lights of death the first thing they will tell you is to remove the HDD.

But what the F it only red rings when he plays GTA IV on his HDD for 15 mins but when he takes the HDD off he plays perfectly fine with no red lights and also he said it only red rings when he is playing GTA IV with his HDD if he played any other game with his HDD on ,everything runs smoothly.

then call them up and see what they'll do. there is no one on here who is going to magically fix the hard drive for him.

You might have some luck asking on the GTAIV forums because I do remember some people reporting problems playing with their HDD when the game launched. I don't know if there was a fix found, as not experiencing it myself I didn't pay much attention to it, but someone in that forum may know the answer.

If it works without the HDD attached then you can play that way, but without a MU you won't be able to get very far and have to replay the same bits over and over, and of course would incur the extra cost of buying a MU

Eventually it will RROD with out the HD on, he's on borrowed time. He needs to call my-xbox to have it returned, he might as well call now to save some time.

First of all: one week is not long. And no, you won't damage your HD by NOT using it.

m8 i really can't be certain that nothing will happen, but don't thing not using the HDD is damaging it, on the other hand using it too much can be harmful. Anyway when i started using my xbox again after nearly a year it worked just fine.

well thats a sign u got 3 red lights for real when certain games crash at the same point all the time if u want to proove its the xbox or hd, then put the hd in ur xbox and play for 20 mins to get passed the crash zone eventualy what ur mate is going to find is this problem gets worse and worse and probs the hard drive will work fine in ur xbox. this problem will get worse and more frequent then one day his system wont turn on, he really needs to send his system off asap. when u get 3 red lights is a error message telling you to send it back, they are ways to by pass the error so u can boot up the system and maybe play on it but its pointless as the system is that unstable and will just crash all the time. like its doing now, tell ur friend to send it back other wise he aint going to have a decent quality of game play until he does
