Yes they can be played online because XBOX live work's for both XBOX and XBOX 360 so you can pop in Halo 2 after you get your bun's kicked in Halo 3 xD

Actually it's not impossible as it was possible to play Halo 1 online free using the original Xbox and a PC app. I did it a lot. However they already stated the games will be in their original form nothing is getting added.
