You have to not finish it. The dog statue causes a glitch. You have to either do it before talking to the shrine, or just avoid the shrine altogether.
I'm pretty sure they released a patch to fix this. Do you have xbox live? It should update automatically. The patch fixed this bug as well as many others, like the weapon duplication and gold bugs. Mine would freeze as well, but it worked after the patch.
I quit and sold this game when it glitched and left me unable to complete the main quest... yeah, there was a lot to do, but it was a lot of work in my character that would have been washed down the drain if I'd restarted. V. annoying!

there is only a tiny bit about 0.01% in the game.... well, that's too little for me... i'm really getting a serious downer from this game.. nothing wrong with it though, it's really good. but it ends today.

I had the same problem with clavicus vile. I took the quest then never went back. Don't you have to finish it so you can do they very last Daedric quest, the crab lookin guy in the mountains.
yeah there is a patch that you download it comes up the first time you play Oblivion while connected to xbox live and it will take care of the problem.
I sold my Oblivion copy around the time i bought it, i got all the achievements and everything, but it got boring. But i have no clue why your oblivion copy is doing that.
the problem you seem to be having should be easily fixed by clearing the oblivion game data cache, after playing for ever the loading times get really slow and the game sometimes freezes.

this doesnt clear any of your save game data, but for example the game remembers every item you have ever dropped, and that builds up, so it clears that. no biggie. Try this fix and you should be able to finish the quest
IMHO, it's your fault. Seriously, with such a buggy game it is down to your own stupidity that you don't save often, and in multiple saves. Everyone who plays oblivion at some point or anouther encounters a glitch, some bad some so-so. It's not even a major quest so I don't see the point in you complaining so much. Whats the reward? I've more or less completed the entire game and got a good charector but never had to do that. If its daedric the only realy good ones are azuras star, goldbrand, mace of molag whatever and the skeleton key from nocternal. If you think you have it bad, oreyn has glitched from the fighters guild and has made it so my level 30-35 (Can't remember) char can't finish it. To make matters worse he's a meler. I can't use the best fence since he's glitched so he won't barter. There are many other glitchs on my game but atm, I can't think of any. Oh my grey fox's cowl is completely useless, as I can't yeild. Meaning as soon as i put it on i have a perminent bounty of 2000+. Quit complaining or play around it. Unless you've put over 70+ hours into your charector, then you don't have it half as bad as others.

DO NOT DO THAT! Like you said it remembers every thing you've ever dropped. So if you drop something in a guild or a house it'll disapear. Be very carefull before doing this. It probably clears other items as well or misc things. I highly reccomend being carefull when using this.

I meant it's his fault to not have multiply saves when everyone knows how buggy this game is. He blows this way out of proportion, either he has anger problems. Or he's just venting in an idiotic way. The game is so full of bugs because of the sheer size of it. Otherwise, if they had tested and found every single bug in this game it wouldnt be out for anouther few years. He's completed the entire game, why he hasn't encountered a glitch before hand is beyond me. And if it's just this final quest, what the hell is the big deal! Especialy by the way he's posting it. Oblivion is well known for bugs and such, to only have one save and not save before and after quests is a little stupid. And for worst logic just go to system wars ;).
