It's best to get it on the pc. Although portal has no online and TF2 has a strong community and since i've had it there's never been a single day that i haven't found a game. Although sometimes it says there's no games just keep trying they'll pop up eventually.

Sorry for the double post... I dont remember about the achievements, but to answer your question about the discs, one disc holds all five games.

One disc and no there's a thousand each game has a few achivements.
I rented it. Got sucked into Half Life 2 more than any other game I've played, but I've yet to buy it. It's 30 dollars at Gamestop. I would've bought it for 60 dollars long ago but forgot about it, I'm hoping to buy it soon and complete it before October.
