Other gamer's audio

Hello, I was wondering how it is we can sometimes hear other players talking even though no group has been set up - for example, playing zombies on Black ops 3, I can sometimes hear one or more of the other players but they can't hear me - what do you think is going on?

They are using in game voice chat, maybe they can't hear you because your mic is not working, or you are in a party yourself
