So I know there's a broken 360 discussion thread but from what I saw that was just for RROD so I hope this is okay.

Okay so I'm having a problem and this seems like the place to come to for help. So I was playing my 360 today for a couple hours when it overheated. Now granted it did get pretty warm in my room so I thought nothing of it. I do keep the console sitting on hockey pucks and on my desk so it has proper ventilation. I googled the problem and it said leave it off for an hour or so and to keep the power brick off the ground, so I did all that. I left it off for about three hours and lifted the brick off the ground. When I turned it on it ran fine...for about 5 minutes before overheating. This time I put a fan on it, left it alone for about 3 more hours, turn it on, same thing 5 minutes and it's down. I don't know what to do, but any help is appreciated.

Chance are since he sent it to microsoft it isnt refurbed, but if its still under warranty send it back in and have them take a look again because it should not be acting like that all.

Alright. I assumed I would have to do that, I just hoped that I wouldn't lose it for a few weeks. Thanks for your help.

Three ways to prevents RRoD and overheating:

1) Venelate! Keep Xbox 360 and power supply away from tight spaces.

2) Intercooler TS; it's 20 dollars (Amazon.com sells cheaper though). It may be too loud, but...

3) Install games to HDD! For approx. 5 GB each game, your disk doesn't spin while playing so the Xbox is quiter and your disk no longer gets scratched! Since the disk doesn't spin, this causes the Xbox to extract less heat. Also, it reads scratched disks! If the game is scratched and the game wasn't installed the the HDD, borrow a friend's disk and install it. If you run out of memory, use a flash drive to save game data and then your HDD will have more room to save the games.

IMO, it doesn't matter if the Xbox 360 is in vertical or horizontal position.

Thanks for your help too. The Xbox and Power Supply are well ventilated so thats not the problem. It's not the disc spininng because I took out the disk and left it on the dashboard not touching anything but it still overheated. I will look into the Intercooler. Thanks again.

Buying the Intercooler on Amazon.com is a cheap way. Don't buy it used though, for some people may sell you one that the one of the fans don't work.

I know it's not because of the disk, but installing the game overall prevents overheating. When the disk doesn't spin it causes the Xbox 360 to disperse less heat.

For your last resort, buy the Xbox 360 Slim. It has built in Wi-Fi N and does not overheat or have RRoD. Or you can buy an Xbox 360 Elite bundle online. The bundles have the Jasper chip and they come with 2 controller and a game! You're basically saving well over 100 dollars doing that.

The bundle has 250 GB... more than twice the size of the 120 GB models so you can install all your games. Last thing I'm going to say!
