huh, thats odd. Coop was one of the biggest selling points for me, I wonder what they mean by better coop implementation?
Wow an 8.5 is pretty good. Realistically though they could have rated it a 4 and i still would have bought it.
Braddah_B
They could have called it the worst game ever made and I would still buy it.
Here are some OXM reviews for other recent games:
Shadow Complex - 9
Batman: Arkham Asylum - 9
Halo: ODST - 9.5
Section 8 - 7.5
Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising - 8
Wet - 7
Wolfenstein - 7.5
Ghostbusters - 8
Prototype - 8.5
Red Faction: Geurrilla - 7
So, 8.5 isn't a bad review. Their reviews trend below average for non-360 exclusives. Prototype was well reviewed and Borderlands got an equal score to that game.
Borderlands looks like a bad Fallout 3 knock off to me. KC_Hokie
Maybe to someone who knows nothing about it.
i am happy because from reading around, a ton of effort and uniquenss was put into this game, so it is good that this game got good reviews
howeve,r i found it slightly distubing that a lot of peple who siad that theyre buying this game is only to hold htem over until mw2 releses.
anywys, i'll probalby try this game out since i like looting games

It's a RPG/FPS that takes place on a barren world. How can you not compare it to Fallout 3? (other than the cartoonist graphics)Actually it is a FPS/RPG it's going to have MUCH more of a base on shooting than FO3 and with the inclusion of vehicles, millions of weopons, diverse interplanetary setting, and set class systems, I'd like to think it is worlds apart than FO3, but i guess you are entitled to your own opinion.
I on the other hand disliked FO3 because of its clunky shooting and rather bland and drab visual style.

Where Fallout 3 was a mix of RPG and FPS, it was aiming much more towards role-playing, quests and storyline.
While I have yet to play Borderlands, and base my opinion entirely off preview info, it looks to be much more FPS with frenetic combat, while the RPG side is much more in the background - levelling your character stats while away from combat.
Anyway, an 8.5 is a good score, though the brief text summary suggests it is not a game that will appeal to everyone. Might try to find a copy of the magazine to read the full review.
Like I said, OXM scores trend lower than average for non-360 exclusives. They're obviously biased a bit, look at that ODST score. Anyway, 8.5 still = great. It's about what I expected for an average and this score is probably on the low end. The Gamespot score will be similar if not higher.
All those people who said Borderlands is another Too Human, Two Worlds or Hellgate London have been proven wrong. It isn't going to disappoint.
Judging by this score it'd be a great FO3 knockoff if it were a FO3 knockoff and it isn't. Calling BLs a bad FO3 knock-off just proves you're uninformed.
i love it how ppl say a game sucks just bc it didnt get a 9 or 9.5 are you guys out there really that shallow?
The game looks awesome & I've been on the fence about getting it ever since I first took a look into it, but there is one thing holding me back. This one thing is Gearbox Software. Yes everything about the game looks great & fun however I've not liked a single one of their games so I just might have to rent it & try before I purchase.
For one, a score of 8.5 is better than over 90% of new games. Second, the whole "millions of weapons" deal is far over rated. They are randomly generated weapons. Personally I would rather have 50 or so some what realistic, well thought out and balanced weapons. Three, I pointed out about a dozen times the areas where this game was going to be lacking, and predicted an average score around an 8-8.5, which I was endlessly flamed for.
The game doesn't look bad, but truely only people WANTING the game to be great take previews as THE word. Previews always state the good and never state the bad parts of a game. You can read all of the previews that you want, but OXM actually has the game, so for the time being I take their word.
I don't know why the fanboys of this game just assumed it was going to get 10s everywhere, but the entire point is if it's your type of game and you don't buy it because it only gets 8.5 ratings, then you should seriously rethink what you do as a hobby because it doesn't seem that you are enjoying gaming for any of the right reasons.

lol dont forget they gave Dead Space a 6.5 Seems like this magaize can either score games way to high most of the time and other times score the good ones WAY too lowHere are some OXM reviews for other recent games:

According to the OXM review scores explained page an 8.0 to 8.5 = Great. Here is their explanation of what an 8.5 score means - "A great game and an A-list title, but either it has niche appeal, suffers from minor technical or design issues, or has peripheral problems like a crummy interface."

[QUOTE="billyd5301"]Borderlands and Fallout 3 will be spoken about in the same sentence for years to come. Hakud0ushiWhat about Rage? lol. Borderlands isn't even out and people say the game its similar. :P I just think unless you are a diehard fan of any of these three games (I am a die hard fan of none of these 3), you are going to classify them together. If we were talking about flight games on 360 we would see the names Blazing Angels, Hawx, Ace Combat, and Over G Fighters. All of these games are completely different styles from each other, but it's just the class they fall into because they all involve shooting things in planes. If we talk about FPS games with guns and barren planets then we are going to see the names Fallout 3, Borderlands, and possibly Rage (I have read next to nothing about it). I can tell you all of the differences between Final Fantasy VII, Chrono Cross, and Parasite Eve, but you will still class them together as JRPGs.
Exactly. Borderlands will be inevitably compared to Fallout 3 just like Dragon Age will be compared to Oblivion. KC_Hokie
Well ok, but it's not a bad Fallout 3 knockoff like you said before. As this review indicates it's a great game that happens to look something like Fallout 3 to people who don't much about it.

It's a RPG/FPS that takes place on a barren world. How can you not compare it to Fallout 3? (other than the cartoonist graphics)I try not to speculate about games that are not out yet. I think it's safe to say that it did take some of the Fallout 3 elements, but I wouldn't go nearly as far as to say "bad knock off".
And like Hakud0ushi alluded to; It's trendy to go back and bash games that at one time were the hottest thing on the market. Like if someone were to say "Fallout 3=fail just like this". Fallout 3 deserves it's great rating, and fan following. If this game and Fallout 3 are linked together forever that's not a bad thing at all. And getting compared or exeeding to Fallout 3 should be considered an honor.

I know. But saying, "It's a RPG/FPS that takes place on a barren world. How can you not compare it to Fallout 3" implies that Fallout 3 is also an RPG/FPS on a barren world, when in reality, it is an RPG that takes place on during a nuclear winter.
He was talking about Borderlands.[QUOTE="NintendoGamer3"][QUOTE="Phoenix534"]
- Fallout 3 isn't an RPG/FPS. It's just an RPG that happens to have a first-person perspective.
- Fallout 3 takes place in a nuclear winter on Earth. Borderlands takes place on planet that just so happens to be moderatly barren
- Gameplay(from vids only. won't know how Borderlands actually plays for 10 more days.)

you may want to read up on your stuff before you throw terms around. i dont think you really know what "nuclear winter" means if you think it describes fallout 3
Fallout 3 was overrated mediocrity. Borderlands looks like it's fun, which is a recipe that Fallout 3 was lacking in.
Yeah, I found that statement to be a little worrying, too. Without fantastic co-op, this may just be a rental for me despite my pre-order and anticipation. I will be interested to see what the other reviews say.huh, thats odd. Coop was one of the biggest selling points for me, I wonder what they mean by better coop implementation?

Yeah, that's exactly what I expected. Looked good, but not great.

Uhh, 8.5 is great according to the OXM review explanation, wtf? This magazine isn't the best review source, they're just the first. The review is still GREAT though.

(other than the cartoonist graphics) Of course you can compare it, but they don't look much alike outside of their written description. What they mean by the co-op is that there is no ammo pool and you cant trade so you have to watch what you pick up. and also if you are like 2 levels higher then your friend you will get destoryed/ be god like.huh, thats odd. Coop was one of the biggest selling points for me, I wonder what they mean by better coop implementation?

I was expecting a 8.5/9 from most reviewers so this is good.
The game looks very good for now, and it might be my personal GOTY.
