I tend to only play online with friends, if we're on CoD4 or whatever, we usually stay in party chat, with a few mates on other games. Like you said, most people don't talk anyway, so it's pretty pointless switching to game chat. Most of the time in the game lobby, it's just me and my friends with mics even plugged in, and like 6/7 people without mics.
Party chat kinda killed in-game chat.
Edit: If we're on something that really requires communication with the whole team like Left 4 Dead, then we go to the game channel.

That's why I prefer party chat to the trashtalk channel that is just the main game audio
TLAD. You'll get a lot of people being pissy and blaming each other for not protecting the bus in witness protection. Some players are at their best silent.
Most people talk to their friends and in parties but i have ran into a few that speak to strangers. If i am playing in the monring i will not talk hardly at all because i am way tired. I will talk to the people that seem cool. i hate annoying people i just have to turn my mic on to talk to them.
Lately when I play Halo it seems as though no one has a mic hooked up and the ones that do are in a party chat which is really annoying when you are playing team objective games. Why play a game where you need to talk with a team but not have a mic hooked up? It really drove me nuts this weekend when playing the double xp grifball because you need to work as a team to score and the idiots in the party chats would just bull rush in and try and score without help and that rarely works.
the mode is flawed. Once the gang gets the bottom of the bus early on, even with one bomb, its all over.TLAD. You'll get a lot of people being pissy and blaming each other for not protecting the bus in witness protection. Some players are at their best silent.

Reasons why they are not talking:
Yes, it would be great if more people talk online. I for one always keep my mic active.
I don't talk at all online. I mean, if we're playing a team-based game, then yeah, I'll talk. But I won't go talking all buddy-buddy in the lobby with a bunch of people I don't give a damn about. If I don't have anyone from my friend's list on there, I won't speak. But if it's a team-based game, yeah, I'll say enemy locations, or where I am in position to the bomb or flag or whatever, but there's no reason to get all chatty. It's annoying to hear 8 people talk about some stupid crap all at once.
whats up with that , you go on a game and no one in the lobby or match speaks :S why do you think this is ? rawrBwhen i play halo i dont because everyone on halo is a douche or 14 years old when i play cod i dont because...well for the same reasons minus the 14 years old part plus my mic is broken
99% Percent of the time i just dont want to hear them with children and profanity and grown men throwing baby tantrum's cause im winning - does anyonereally want to here what *ss holes have to say ?the same for people who bought a webcam for their 360 so you can stare at your buddyto just chat LOL
imusuallyin a personal chat or i just have nothing to say. i live by the principal that if i dont have anything to say that it is worthless to sit there babbling like most people do, that to me is annoying, when someone just sits there talking and does not shut the **** up
