Some people I know absolutely LOVE achievements and try to get 1000 in alot of their games, but other people I know just think it's pointless and don't even bother with it. Well I want to know what you people think. Do you like the idea of gamerscore and try to get alot of achievements in games you play? Or do you not like them and not try to get them? Or do you not like them or hate them and are just neutral?

Personally I love achievements because they can get me returning to games even after I beat them. For example, 6 months after "being done" with Viva Pinata, I looked at my achievements and thought "hey there's some pretty cool achievements I stil haven't unlocked" and so it got me to come back to the game for a couple of days while I tried at those challenges I hadn't done before. If achievements didn't exist though, I probably wouldn't have thought of returning to it. I like the idea of a list of challenges that I can come back to even after beating a game.

I do however think it's stupid when people play games they don't enjoy just because it has easy gamerscore (like that Avatar game).

What do you think?

I always get as many achievements as my skill level allows, but I don't think I will ever chase after the collecting achievements (100 pigeons, 100 flags, etc.) unless I am extremely, extremely bored.

I was thinking about this today. I used to never care about them, but nowadays my view is 100% the same as the OP. However, as time moved on I went from not caring about achievs at all, to wanting to get as many as I can with the games I own (I would never rent a game like avatar for achievements). The bad thing about this though is that rather than sitting back and enjoying Gears of War 2's campaign, all I could think about was rushing through the game to get the achievements dealt with so I could move on the multiplayer achievements/gameplay. Obviously this is a bad thing in my case because they're a little distracting, I love them when going back to old games to get achievements, but I hate them in the sense of new games being occupied with doing something only for achievements

I like Achievements, but I am not big about getting them, I play my games because I love them, if a game is fun I will try to get as many as I can, if I feel like moving on then I will move on. play another game and try to get achievements on that, but I try not to be a Acheivement grubber to make things cleaner.

Its something extra in a game, and that can ONLY be a good thing. If you don't like or aren't interested in them, then don't worry about them - if you like them, than good times, because they'd add alot of gameplayto each game.

What I don't like are bad achievement, like some of the ones in hells highway

i love them, they force me to do things in games in ways that i would not have thought of, they can add an extra challenge and dimension to the game that can totally shift how i see the game. They add a tonne of replay value and make me spend a lot of time with a game that deserves it and the other added bonus is that it stops me making stupid purchases because it is hard to get tired of a game quickly

Yeah there are a little reason why I love the 360. Granted when I got my new 360 on Sunday I had to start my gamer profile all over again so I lost all of mine.

i personally enjoy achievements i use them to test my skill however, there are some that are a little ridiculous like the get 3,000,000 multiplayer kills in Gears achievement or whatever that's just insane

I used to try to get the most out of achievements during my first 360. I even went as far as buying games like King Kong and N3. Now that I bought my second one and began with a new gamertag, I've chosen to play for fun and not focus that much on achievements.

I voted no just because achievements have ruined gaming for me on any other system!! "It's like why bother if there are no achievements". I really don't care about the gamerscore so much as I do about a record of what I have done.

I completely agree. Even though the PS3 has Trophies, it just isn't the same. Not every game has them and Sony has been slow to adopt a universal plan like Microsoft. Thanks to achievements, 90% of my games are purchased for the 360 and only exclusives are purchased on my PS3.

i cant stand achieviements,

they make people play rubbish games just for gamerscore, they ruin some online games because people just go out of their way to get them.

they get people addicted to playing for achieviements rather than just enjoying a game and having fun.

i know a few friends on xbox live who are just like zombies, waiting for that achieviement unlocked thrill. if they have all the achieviements they can get on a game they will never play it again.

when they talk about games they talk about the achieviements not the actual fun in just playing it.

and the saddest thing are folks that wont play games on any other system because they dont get achieviements, like they are missing their fix

i wish you had the option to turn gamerscore off.

Lol.I feel the same way. It feels unusual playing a game on my PS3 and not being able to unlock achievements. It sometimes gives me no reason to finish a game because of that. For example, i never finished uncharted because the story was uninspiring for me and having no achievements gave me no reason to keep playing it.

thats one reason why they are a bad thing, they are stopping you from enjoying other games just because you dont get achieviements which is ridiculous.

Same here, but I don't think it is a bad thing. I have a Wii and a PS3, but I don't buy games on them like the 360 because it wont give me any achievements. Meanwhile I'm happy to play games that range from bad to horrible on the 360 because it increases my gamer score. I'm playing Too human right now and enjoying it because of Achievements.

I find myself being an achievement wh*re so I really don't like them. I've played several bad games just for achievements (didn't buy them - bought a month of unlimited rentals at Blockbuster). I've found myself sometimes more concerned about the achievements than the game itself occasionally.

Ilike achievements because it gives you something to do if your bored and is another reason to revisit old games. And to all the people who say they don't like them, you dont have to try to get them... just ignore them...

I think they're a great idea. As has already been mentioned, they encourage you to either re-play games, or to play them in an entirely different way than you have previously.

One of my friends and I launched a challenge in August that we called '30k by Christmas Day'. Our goal was to get from 20k gamerscore up to 30k in about 4 months. This was great fun, and I discovered some real gems, that I wouldn't otherwise have played (Timeshift!)

Incidentally, we made it to 30k, and have now started on 50k by christmas day 2009:o

Why should you care how other people enjoy their hobby? How does it affect you? Video gaming is a hobby, enjoy it however YOU want to. There is no reason whatsoever to care about what another person, even if they're a friend, does to enjoy it and it doesn't actually affect you in any way plus you don't really have the right to judge anyone for playing for achievements.

I do think there should have been 5 options in this poll: Love, Like, Neutral, Dislike, and Hate. Personally I would pick Like because I think they add replay value but at the same time I don't go out of my way to get them, such as I've never played that Avatar game. I looked at it and thought it looked like a bad game. I have played King Kong, this is for those who happen to look up my gamer tag and call me an achievement whore, which I actually enjoyed the game. I felt it was a solid shooter/game considering it's based on a movie launch so I didn't play it for the easy 1k but rather the experience.

I don't care about them that much, but I have been getting a lot lately due to Fallout 3 and an influx of games from Christmas. If the achievements are easy enough to get, such as completing quests or doing something really simple, then yeah I'll get the achievement. If it's something ridiculous however, like collecting a bunch of things that could take hours, then forget it. So, I'm nuetral toward them. I won't go out of my way to get them, but it's fun to collect the ones that are doable. My gamerscore has jumped up though because of all the games I got for Christmas.

i like achievements that aren't kill an enemy with a Qtip or kill 100,000 people (im looking at u GoW2) or be #1 on the ranking boards. I like ones that are a hard but not impossible or take 10 hours to get (endless setlist). i

I like them. Before achievements I would never try to complete a game on it's hardest difficulty setting, now I pretty much always do and the games are more rewarding as a result.

achievements are great, they make games last longer and instead of beating a game and having nothing to do and have to buy a new game, you can stay on the same game and try to get achievements instead of wasting money over and over again to get a new game that only lasts about 6 hours

I have a love/hate relationship with achievements. On one hand I love the replay value that they bring. On the other hand they frustrate me when I find myself chasing an impossible achievement like getting 100 kills with the shotgun on Prey (No one plays that game online).
