I say YES. MS has the technology to make a Zune, keyboards, joysticks, and Xbox360. Why can't they do the same with a portable gaming system? Why does Apple and Sony get to have all the fun? I like the old 3 way system battles (SNES vs. Genesis vs. TurboGraphx16 AND PlayStation vs. GameCube vs. Saturn), so this makes a lot of sense.TheRealLisaAnn
The PlayStation belong to the N64 and Dreamcast generation, not the Saturn and Gamecube.
The PS2 belonged to the GC and XBox gen.
And right now it's the wii, PS3, 360. We still have 3 competitors. The only thing that changed from the past is that Sega quit the console market and MS stepped in.
And after seeing how crappy the 360 was at the beggining I wouldn't get a handheld system from then... not until a couple years after the first one hit the market.
Besides Nintendo is doing things right with the handheld market (as has always) so I don't feel the need to change my Portable gaming platform anytime soon.
Yes, they could enter the handheld warfare to mash out the 3DS and PSP2, but because of those new releases Microsoft would take a big risk.
Like it or not, that's what Windows Phone 7 is.

Dreamcast is in the PS2, GC, Xbox gen(Fifth Generation). Saturn was fourth(PS1, N64, Jaguar)
MS is smart enough not to go down that road. The ds has that locked down for one big reason that a lot of ppl don't even think about when trying to figure out all the reason the psp couldn't give it a challenge. MS and playstation all though have come out with many casual games and rated E for everyone type games they are the big dogs in the yard for hardcore games and machinery. When you look at the psp and psp2 you see a lot of hardware thats ideal for eveything a hardcore gamer could want, but here is the problem! between the ages of 16-40 we will say how many gamers have no life at all that they can play a portable everywhere they go for long stretches for a game like uncharted or mass effect? There are always exceptions but most of us don't have jobs that require us to travel a lot. Alot of us have familys and a lot of us drive. Because of those reasons it limits the time we have to play a portable. On the other hand 5 year old to lets say 14 year old its ideal cause they don't drive so car rides are great. When mom and dad have the tv occupied it words when going to play with friends it works on family trips it works. SO its easier for Nintendo to market to them with games that appeal to them and make a killing. I had a psp i loved it but didn't have the time to play. I drove to work. I have a thirty min lunch cant do much then. and when i get home which do you want to do pay a handheld or jump on your big screen and play online? There are many other factors to look at but this is the biggest hurtle and now its even harden when i can pull out my Iphone and play a quick game during those small windows that i do have time to play instead of trying to get deep into a game i would normally play at home. I personally wish it were different but its not.
How is this even being asked?
Microsoft has a portable gaming device, it's called the Windows 7 phone. It's not like they're hiding it either since there's ads all over TV and in magazines and the radio so really, who doesn't know that they have one?
Handheld gaming devices are dying and it's a fast death, with phones being available for younger and younger users the trend now is to make an all in one device.
You honestly have to work hard to see that Microsoft isn't in the portable gaming industry now
I'm not interested in a portable device at all. SO for selfish reasons alone, I hope they keep all their focus on the Xbox Console.
Nah. Sony makes the mistake of making the PSP a console and not an actual handheld.
I wouldn't want Microsoft to fall into the same mistake and then getting dominated by the DS or 3DS.
You could make the arguement that there currently is a 3 way battle over portable gaming between Nintendo, Sony and Apple (ipod/ipad).
Why would Microsoft want to get into the race at this point, being so far behind the others?
I think the closest thing you will get is Microsoft supporting gaming on their Windows basesd smart phones.
The PSP isn't a handheld? News to me.Nah. Sony makes the mistake of making the PSP a console and not an actual handheld.

WP7 is dying a faster death than handhelds. How is this even being asked?

Nope, not at all
The phone launched with sales better then expected after the Kin and the way the game section has been growing it's a full fledged success for Microsoft's portable gaming.
That's why I'm confused why people are talking about it like "if it did happen" it's already happening.

Wrong.
Microsoft could but you have to segment your market. It's already been stated that sony and nintendo dominate the portable market. If microsoft jumped in, it may be a loser for them. As successful as Apple has been, notice apple is not in the console market and microsoft is not in the portable market.

Yeah, about that
Nope
Also what's impressive is that they're doing this without having the two biggest carriers carry their phones yet

And thats great for them but as this convo goes its still not a real hand held gaming divice as such as the ds or psp. its a phone and even though we all know that phones are slowly killing the handheld gaming market there phone isn't even close to being on par with the Iphone so there not competeing at all in any race phone or other. But i still think with that they are doing what they expected or a lil better and is very happy about it and they should be. But as far as a full handheld built for only gaming not making calls they are smart for staying out of it.I personally cant stand portable gaming and I think there are already too many portables on the market. So I say NO to microsoft making a portable system.
Am I blind? I don't see no poll.
Honestly, I could care less about MS making something portable. I'm not a big fan of portable devices. Most people game on their portable smart phones now days more then anything.
