Usually just assume that the latest Call of Duty game, the latest Halo game (not including Anniversary as it was just a remake), and games that were recently released are the popular ones online. There are always a few lucky games that break the mold and stay popular online for a while longer than usual, but unfortunately most of the community goes back to Call of Duty eventually.

NBA 2k12 So, any of the major popular franchises are going to be easy to go online and jump into a game. And though it's not on the list, I can attest that Ghost Recon: Future Soldier has a thriving online community. It's all that I'm playing at this moment and I never have trouble finding a game.
Call of Duty is definitely the most popular online game out right now. It is more competitive and not AS enjoyable if your not good. However Minecraft can be a fun game for any video game standard and even more so with friends.
