Core is a horrible, horrible deal. The Pro is pretty good because its a bit cheaper than elite, still has everything you need and you can get it with a free game (COD3 in Canada). The Elite is also a very good deal and I think it's the best way to go for a new comer because for only $40 more you get like 5 times the storage space and the marketplace keeps on adding better content all the time.
I bought a Pro a little over a month ago but I don't care cause I bought my 360 primarily for gaming so I don't need all the storage space.Â
Here's my assessment of the different SKU's:
Core: It's really just a bad decision all around. Microsoft never should have made a system without an HDD and nobody should have bought it either. You have to buy either a memory card with a tiny amount of storage or an HDD that would add enough to the cost that you end up spending as much as if you bought the premium or elite systems anyways. plus you get a wired controller. fun.
Premium: Really the only system they should be selling, it has everything you need, and maybe the HDD is a bit on the small side, but are you honestly going to be renting a bunch of HD movies and buying a bunch of HD tv shows from the video marketplace to take up all that space? If not, you probably won't be using it up anytime soon. You also get a wireless controller, an xbox live headset, and component cables right out of the box, which is certainly nice.
Elite: This is microsoft saying "we're scared of the PS3." The problem is that the elite is anything but elite. The only issues they addressed with the elite was adding a larger HDD and an HDMI port, but it would have been more valuable if they had just started producing the premium system with an HDMI port and sold larger HDD's for less than $180. It is black though, and that's probably worth $80 alone, right?
