I heard that 33% of all 360 have failed in relation to overheating or other technicl problems. Are there any steps or precautions in avoiding overheating or other issues? I heard of a few guys using a regular external fan to cool down their 360. Does this actually work??

I believe those coolers are a load of bunk. There really isn't a way to prevent the rings yourself, the best thing is to leave your xbox and power brick out of tight spaces in the open where it can ventilate and even then you might get the rings. I've had mine since launch and have been lucky enough to never suffer any problems although I was around when it happened to my friend. To sum this up, at least you have a 3 year warrantee now lol.
