It has to do with the type of DVD drive not the age of the machine. Microsoft use a lot of different drives, and it seems a number of them aren't compatible with the firmware update that's needed to get them to read the new disc format.
Huh! Hope mine doesn't work. I got an older model and would love to upgrade without buying a new one!

Darn, Darn, Darn!!!!! Got my system update and it didn't mess up my console! Guess I have to stick with it until RROD appears in 2012. It's every 2.5 years RROD appears, like clock work on my old system.
I would love for my console to break down since I have finals coming up soon and knowing microsoft the last time I sent my RROD console to them it took them 1month and 2 weeks to get it back so I wouldn't mind waiting a month for a 250gb xbox slim as a reward for good grades :) Please cause a problem on my console :D
Really struggling to find information about this around the net. All seems very secretive to me. My xbox has been struggling to play disks for a while but after many attempts it usually gets going. I bought Dirt3 today and it wont even start just keeps saying unrecognised disk. I have a July 2007 Arcade machine(UK). I've contacted microsoft but not heard anything. Sucks so much, just wanna play Dirt :(
just updated mine half my games dont work now lucky i just finished la noire before the update or id be well p*ssed off seems like all my decent games wont work and left with crummy ones i wish i never bought in the 1st place grrr
As far as I'm aware I have not had this new firmware update on my Xbox 360's. Both work fine and dandy. Perhaps the firmware update hasn't been rolled out where I live, in the UK.
