The 3 years covers the red ring hardware failure only. Otherwise its a 1 year warrenty on everything else. And no it shouldnt cost anything.

You can go to xbox.com, or call 1-800-4my-xbox and they'll get the info they need from you. You dont need a date of purchase though because the 3 years covers every 360 since launch at the moment. They just need the serial number and your personal info.

You should register your console. But if you don't, I believe they can determine the manufacturing date of your console by the serial number.

Save your recipt. You're warranty begins on the date of purchase. If you have an issue with your XBOX that you need to send it in they will register it for you when you call. I hope they get the whole RROD thing fixed. I have to drop mine off today and really don't want to have to do it again. E V E R !

the 2nd time my 360 died i was really annoyed cuz it never gave me the 3 red lights and therefore wasnt in warrenty no more. so i just lied to the guy on the phone and said it had the 3 red lights and they fixed it for free

they will never know that you lied because as soon as they recieve your console they send you a completey different one straight away before looking at the console you just sent them. its genious i tell you :D
