Nope..nothing, they're just bragging rights. Some people try to collect them avidly, and most others just enjoy the game and take whatever points come their way..:)
P.S, though MS DID have a contest last year and there was talk about expanding on that, but I haven't seen anything recently..
Yeah..they initially were..and people were amassing hundreds of thousands of points..which of course came with the remarks of people having no life..:) Then latter part of last year MS introduced some Old-Spice challenge, multiple level thing where if you achieved a certain number of points, you would get prizes and stuff. Basically make getting those points a worthwhile thing. But I didn't follow is closely enough to see what happened with it..
In general though, the entire concept of achievements and gamerscore was basically invented to allow proper/thorough exploration of ALL that a game has to offer and also to make people re-play a game a second time.
For example, Gears of War has the "collect all tags" acheivements. But you might have run through the game quickly the first time, and enjoyed it. You might want to go back a second time just to find the tags and do other achievements..so in theory you get you full $60 of fun out of it..
achievements are great, they add more value to short games, because you will want to go back and get them.
The only reason I haven't gotten a ps3 so far is because I'm waiting on Home to come, which will have trophies!
achievements make games so much more fun to games to me.
