Does the ethernet cable have to be a certain standard (5e, 6), or does it not matter?

I am not really aware of the standards but I am using a generic ethernet cable for both my PC and 360 with no issues.

Depends where you connect it to. There's two main types you can use (maybe a few more) and one will only work when you connect directly to a router and the other only works when you connect it to a computer (shared connection). Crossover and straight cables.

Just grab any old Cat5 cable. If you can somehow screw up and plug in a CAT3....well...I'm amazed you found some.
