The game takes patience and is not a run and gun shooter or anytype of fast paced game but if you can get into the game I am sure you will like it.
You really have to get into exploring and finding new places, weapons, people, etc.
Otherwise to me, it is a generic shooter.

I don't see any sense in this what so ever?
The shooting in the game isn't so great plus the amount of freedom is far from generic shooter.
This game is eaxctly what you stated. If someone isn't interested in it most likely they don't like what you mentioned exploring completing multiple quests etc.
Give it time. When I first played the game I was always lost, got ripped from the large rats (which later became more of an annoyance than a challenge), and frustrated. It gets better. Like any rpg you have to build your character's strengths, and that take time.
If you don't have patience then rpg obviously isn't your thing.
I wondered the exact same thing and felt the same way about Oblivion. I grinded through but nothing really interesting captured my attention so I couldn't even finish it. But Fallout 3 does get better once you start getting better weapons and the as the story progresses. Personally I enjoyed Fallout 3 the entire game.

Its a tad bit slow at first, but once you play for a while and level up it gets easier and a lot more fun! But I mean, some people just aren't into some RPGs. Which isn't a bad thing, but man if theres a game to get into then it'd be this one!! The game itself is so long and fulfilling without even including all the DLC thats available! I really hope you can get into it man, its one of my favorite games of all time!
yes it does get better ,much better. the same thing happend to me, i got it when it first came out and played it until i beat the guide mission for moria (forgive me if that is the wrong spelling) anyways i said meh and put it down for a month. when my live ran out i played it for an hour or two and then i just could not stop it gets so amazing all the way to the end btw add ons are good to. my advice is level up and get some weapons after about 5 or6 missions you should be doing ok and the fun will start and never stop. i felt like a dumba$$ for not playing it sooner and it is still my favorite singleplayer game to date. and as for oh s*!t moments get back to me when theres a super mutant behemoth that the brotherhood is not there to help kill like the first time and it spawns behind you and have to run across the waste land.
