Ok so I am new to Oblivion and have a question. Is the main quest is to locate and close the oblivion gates and everything else are the side quests? Thanks

Tiny spoilers*** The main quest is to close the Great gate and kill some super dude and get back the amulet of fire. You don't have to close all the gates. There is an infinite amount of them, they just keep spawning. To me it gets a little too RPG nerdyish. Too many weird names, items and places.

You can go to the FAQ / Walkthroughs for oblivion and read the main quest line. But yeah to close the main gate and kill the 'super dude' as he said... lol

Thanks! and is the main quest the one that is connected to finding those 4 books? I know I sound like an idiot but I have never played anything like this before and I am trying to really get a grasp on it. I spent like 2 hours trying to pick pocket people and cause mischief and realized that I lost track of what it was I was supposed to do.

This should tell you everything you ever might want to know (and stuff that you probably don't want to know) about Oblivion.
