alright, so im signing up for live now. if ive already registered with xbox.com, i recover my account. however, im wondering if i will lose my achievements that i have gotten before live. ive never had an account before and this will be my first time using live.

If you're signing up for live with a new account, yes you will lose your achievements. But if you are simply upgrading the account/profile you have all the achievements on, then no you won't lose them

wait, huh? ive already got this account on xbox.com and ive never used it. im not making a new account when registering for live. im trying to recover account, or thats what they call it.

basically, what should i do to ensure i dont lose my achievements? how should i sign up?

Oh okay, so as it stands now you don't actually have achievements on the account? If that's the case then the way you sign up for live doesn't affect achievements at all, whether you sign up on the console or on xbox.com. You never 'lose' achievements even if delete the save game off your HDD. I would recommend buying a pre-paid card and not giving them your credit card info though.

Oh okay hold on then, now I get what you're meaning. Any account that is used on XBL is linked to xbox.com, it just all depends on the login that you use. So if you're getting XBL Gold and want your achievements to show from previously played games you should sign up the account with the achievements on it for Gold. When you do this you'd have to have a different email for the account though. This makes it a hassle if you often switch from xbox.com and your email. What I do to solve that problem (I have different eamils for my email and XBL) is I use firefox mainly, and the only use I have for Internet Explorer now is checking my email. It makes it a lot easier insteadof having to constantly change Live accounts.

Sorry I kinda suck at explaining things lol...and you don't need to give them a credit card anymore (thankfully) but some people who signed up on the previous Xbox had to and still have their credit card info on the account. Also sometime it seems easier then going out an buying a pre-paid card thing but it's not in the long run.

the one that you have registerd on xbox.com has no achievements as you have yet to use it

The one are ur console will keep its achievements but wont be Live enabled until you upgrade it

On your console (signed in on the profile with the achievements) go to the market place blade, you can just hit left if you're on the main dashboard blade. Then go down to account management and you'll be able to upgrade it to Gold from there

To upgrade simply have ur Xbox ready to connect with xbox live with ur main profile signed in then click sign up for xbox live at the end when it asks to choose ur membership pick SILVER after you do this it should notify you that u have 1 month free xbox live (you can do this 3 times)
