To me, there is not a big difference in the quality. The big thing is how long is each format going to last? Blu-ray already has a good number of companies behind so far and HD-DVD is losing some support. If I were you, I would sit back and wait for a clear winner before you regret it.
The drive is only $130 not a serious committment and if you look at the movies that have been released; Batman Begins, Matrix Trilogy, Transformers, Bourne Trilogy, Harry Potter movies, I think it is not a bad idea. Oh and yes the movies on HD DVD are better than the downloaded HD movies.
Blu Ray does seem to be the eventual winner but it still lacks support from Universal and Paramount, which are HD exclusive.
Ya not only are HD_DVDs better quality than those you can download but you also get all the special features. with the price drop of the HD-DVD player to 130 and so many good movies on HD_DVD that wont be rereleased on Blu-Ray its worth picking up
there is a huge library of great hd dvd titles already out and still being released. i have the hd dvd drive for the 360. i plan on buying hd dvd and dvd for the next little bit. blu ray has not enticed me as of yet. most of the movies on blu ray aren't that attractive to me, but i suppose eventually i will buy a combo drive.
