I'm thinking about getting a 360, I own a wii, but I would like to get a console that has a wide range of games and better graphics as well. my question is:

I know that the 360 and ps3 are directed towards high def tvs. I might take some heat for saying this, but I dont see this huge graphical improvement in the next gen systems. I think what "next gen" improvement is there can be attributed to high def. I dont have a high def tv and cant say im planning on getting one anytime soon. Will this affect my buying a 360? In other words , is buying a 360 a waste if you dont have high def? And im not talking about the new elite model just released with the hdmi connection. Does anyone here own it and not own a high def tv?

Thanks for the input, but im not selling my wii. And im not buying a hdtv. Personally i see it as a waste. I dont think its caught on quite yet in the sense that enough people own one to make it "the next big thing". too high priced and watching an equally high pricedmovie in high def just doesnt do it for me. I just dont want to spend money on anxbox 360 if the only real advantage of it ishigh def. I'm not trying to pick a fight over high def, i just want some peoples opinions, from those that do and dont have high def tvs.

High def makes a small difference. I don't use one for my Xbox, and I don't care. At the end of the day the games play as well even if you are playing it on a 20 year old TV or the latest High def TV.

alright, i own a wii and a 360 and i dont own an HDTV (tho i plan on it soon)
i havnt played my nintendo wii in sooo long. 360 just has so many more games, sweet online, demos, gamerpoints. and even tho it's not high-def, the graphics look great, way better than wii.
if you're thinking long term tho, consider the PS3. tho not yet, it will have good online, lots of great games and blu-ray (which will win the battle)

High def isn't the advantage of having a 360. The advantage of having a 360 is for the next-gen games, and that it doesn't cost as much as a PS3 (and has better games, but that's a different story). High-def is just a bonus. And a very sweet one, I might add, that you seem to have some misconceptions about. I had a standard TV that I played 360 on for a few months and I actually felt mostly the same as you. Didn't see what all the hype about HD was really about. Well, I bought a 32" Samsung LCD and iI quickly saw (and heard) what all the fuss was about. It's tough to even watch non-HD television anymore. And don't even get me started on the difference in visual/aural quality of 360 games when you go HD.

Having said that, the games still look quite gorgeous even on a standard definition TV. You don't need an HD to appreciate the 360. The gameplay itself doesn't change or anything, neither does basically all of the actual game itself. But let's just say that when/if you do go HD, you'll wonder how you ever played on a standard TV in the first place.

If you have a PC HD display you could use that.

HD is just the cherry on top of an ice cream sunday. HD isn't a necessity. Gears and other 360 games still look amazing with out a HD display.

I don't have an HDTV but I've had my 360 for about eight months. I find myself not playing PC games any more or even caring about new PS2 releases. Basically, the 360 is the best console out there right now. PS3 may be better in a couple years, but right now it isn't worth the cash. Just play a few of the awesome games on 360 and you'll see. CoD 2, Gears of War, Shadowrun (which I enjoy despite criticism) and of course you can play Halo 2 if you never had the original Xbox. Kameo is sort of fun, but you'll find almost all of the games on 360 are racing and shooters. If you like either genre, it's for you. If you're more of an RPG gamer, there isn't a hell of a lot available to you on 360 right now other than Oblivion and Marvel: Ultimate Alliance. At least not enough to justify a $400 purchase. That aside, 360 is a great console with a lot of excellent games. I would strongly reccomend one to anyone I know who enjoys video games.

I haven't got a HDTV, just a plain old ordinary TV, and everything seems fine. The graphics are an improvement on last-gen consoles in most cases, although sometimes they are geared up toward HDTV's (for example, dead rising has writing which is near illegible on a standard TV). A HDTV isn't necessary to enjoy the games, but it improves the graphics dramatically.

If you don't want to get a HDTV (like I don't) you can also hook up a 360 to a monitor. You get similar graphics, for a tiny percentage of the price.

That too- you know when all your friends are online and you can acess voice chat and IM with them, you can download a demo for a new game whenever you want, you can buy awesome classic arcade gmaes for $5-10, and matchmaking is usually quick and easy. Oh, and Gears of War has a chainsaw/assault rifle.

Games for 360 are coming out every month, and every month usually has at least one good game.

I have a crappy T.V. and still marvel at the graphics of my games. But if you have an extra 2,000 dollars laying around than go ahead and get an HDTV.

I do think there is a big difference between using a HDTV versus a regular tv. Including being able to play widescreen. But I also think there is a HUGE improvement from the xbox to the 360, and more so from the wii to the 360 - it doesnt matter in what kind of tv you use. Not only the looks, but the physics - Dirt, Gears - you are never going to be able to play any of those kinds of games on the wii or the last generation.

if your a student or something and money's an issue than i would strongly reccomend a ps3 only because of the free online and that 360 has such a high rate of breaking down it could cost you more to own a 360 than a ps3 in the end....

For me, to get my 1st taste of Xbox 360 HD goodness, i needed a VGA cable because i already have a 17" TFT Monitor, and let me tell you, it's super sweet, compared to playing on a CRT. And since getting a 32" HD LCD (The cheapest one i could get was £379) i've never been able to watch TV in anything else ever since I'm used to watching 32" at minimum, and biggest of a 43" set (Not mine, even though i kinda wish it was) it's quite a difference However, Watching Regular TV isn't as clear as watching on a CRT, this part of CRTs i do miss, but i'm not gonna compain, my 360 was my driving force for buying one :D

BS.

The only reason you don't hear of PS3's breaking down is because not enough people own them yet. And don't count on the PSn service HOME to be totally free.

I have a 50 philips SD projection TV and all i can say is WOW the 360 is freaking awesome There is a huge difference from the previous generation. And as said by other xbox live really rocks and the assortment of games is just unparralelled on next gen systems. Now as awesome and blown away that I am by the graphics on a standard TV you can multiply that by 10 times on high def it is really really awesome and wow if you have a surround sound system even better i can't play with out one. When you get your 360 get Lost Planet and Gears of war those game are just awesome. Plus you can play alot of original xbox games. JUST GET THE 360 YOU WILL NEVER REGRET IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This guy obviously knows nothing. only the launch systems had that problem. But Microsoft stood behind the system and repaired them for free in the long run and added to the warranty an extra year they rock. Sony on the other hand when all the PS1 and PS2 were frying and now the Ps3 they just tell you to stick your finger in an unpleasant place and buy another system Sony friggin stinks. There is nothing better than the 360 and Microsofts customer service or the small fee for an awesome on line service. Ther reason sony doesn't charge is it is illegal to charge for something you don't have. There online is non existent and still in shambles!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks everybody for the input. I'm not gonna sell my wii, I actually do enjoy it, and have probably bought more games for it than i have for anyother system in awhile. But I am looking to get something more "next gen". I am surprised at the people who recommend a ps3 over a 360. From my personal comparison between the 2, the 360 has better graphics (the ps3 just seems blurry to me) and from my understanding of computer technology the 360 is the better machine under the hood. As far as the 360 breaking down, my understanding was that was just on launch systems, and the problem has now been corrected. My cousin has owned one for quite a while and never reported any problem. As for high def, i would like to buy a HD tv but dont have the finances right now, and im not spending 200 bucks on something with a little screen for the sake of having hdtv. So I think my fears of buying a 360 w/o high def and being disappointed has been put to rest. I think ill pick one up. Now to get one on ebay or buy it brand new........that might be another topic ;)

360 is not superior in terms of hardware, its just easier to develop for than the ps3....the part about the problem being corrected is not trueasyou still hear about systems breaking down all the time, andthere are a few systems that have no problems, but then you hear about people who have gone through like 4 consoles anda you know that theirs will break down again soon which is lame....

My 360 is connected to an HDTV, but my fiance has her 360 connected to an SDTV. Of course, the HDTV looks better, but it still looks great on the SDTV. Not as clear and a lot of games appear in letterboxed format because it was designed with a widescreen in mind... but I recommend getting a 360 and then saving for an HDTV... it's well worth it. I really enjoy my 360 system and my fiance enjoys hers.

My facts are straight I have owned a 360 since launch the very first day and microsoft has had great customer service they extended my warranty and when it was out of warrnaty they repaired my system and even refuned my money for the repair when they extended the warranty I couldn't be happeir. Sony never did as much they just said buy a new system. At least microsoft admitted they had a problem and stood behind their product. And now its a great trouble free machine I can't say enough good about microsoft!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And they even sent out the repair box super fast I had it within a day or two that is awesome then 5 days late I had my new xbox 360 now it has been perfect ever since and that is with 30 or 40 hrs a week of gaming plus media center use for music and movies now that is really awesome being able to connect with the computer and watch downloaded movies or music whatever Media Center is another bonus of the Microsoft xbox 360 TOTALLY AWESOME!!!!!!

High def or not you will still have just as much fun with the game....but if you have the money, and have the opportunity to choose a console out of the 360 and ps3... browse the games first and the differences and then choose, because not everyone likes the same thing... so just see what games you like best

if your a student or something and money's an issue than i would strongly reccomend a ps3 only because of the free online and that 360 has such a high rate of breaking down it could cost you more to own a 360 than a ps3 in the end....

There online is non existent and still in shambles!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

are you blind, go look around the forums you hear stuff about micrsosft screwing people on the warranty and other stuff all the time....and its not just launch consoles that are dying, its most of them, and if i ts not dying then theres other issues like disks being scratched that microsoft wouldn't admit to for a while.....microsoft did not repair systems for free that were out of warranty so get you're facts straight...the 360 game selection is good, but the hardware and customer service are really lame....

And they even sent out the repair box super fast I had it within a day or two that is awesome then 5 days late I had my new xbox 360 now it has been perfect ever since and that is with 30 or 40 hrs a week of gaming plus media center use for music and movies now that is really awesome being able to connect with the computer and watch downloaded movies or music whatever Media Center is another bonus of the Microsoft xbox 360 TOTALLY AWESOME!!!!!!

yours may be fine, but that doesn't mean everyone elses is, and you must live like a block away from the place where they repair 360s because most people i hear of get it back at least a week later....

[QUOTE="born2runak"]Thanks everybody for the input. Now to get one on ebay or buy it brand new........that might be another topic ;)ipath4life

360 is not superior in terms of hardware, its just easier to develop for than the ps3....the part about the problem being corrected is not trueasyou still hear about systems breaking down all the time, andthere are a few systems that have no problems, but then you hear about people who have gone through like 4 consoles anda you know that theirs will break down again soon which is lame....

well, im no techie, but from unbiased computer people have explained to me, the ps3 might be theortetically more powerfl,in reality it isnt because the computer(s) werent designed for each other due to last minute problems on sonys part. 360 though was completely designed ground up for its computers tocompliment each other. and like i said, from a personal comparison I think 360 just looks better. Certainely I dont know enough about gaming hardware to argue the point though;) As far as the problems, i cant believe there arent a ton of ps3's (the small amount that have been sold) that dont have some problems.
