hi, i was curious to know about the xbox 360's failure rate that seem to be flooding many forums. how long on average until it would breakdown or require serviced maintenance? also, are these failures solely due to inproper care and using it for long periods of time (8+ hours straight of gaming?), or is the lifetime of the 360 naturally short (as in 1-2 years before a new one).

thanks in advance for any help

The failure rate on the first ones is crushingly high. People point the figure at 30-40% and I believe it. I'm on my 4th 360 now sine March. Having said that I'm a collector and treat my consoles immaculately. I still have a working 2600/nes/genesis/etc because I take a ton of care of my stuff. Sometimes they just go. My last 360 was flawless. Never had a single problem with it, and hadn't played it for a month. Turned it on and RROD. I never play for 8 hours at a time. Maybe 3-4 is the limit for me.

Having said I've had tons of problems with my 360, Microsoft Customer Support has been aces as far as I'm concerned. I've received a coffin within 4 days every time, and had a *working* console back in 4 business days after that. Since my last 360 was my 3rd to break they rushed shipped me a coffin in 2 days.

Apparently, if you can score newer one with te new chipsets, the problems dissapear for the most part

so lets say my first 360 does break down, and i get a replacement, is my warantee still valid or is it a one time replacement type thing?

to strayzilla

i dont really play my 360 8 hours a day too. i stopped playing for about 2 weeks and when i tried to turn it on i got the red ring

i wonder if the long period of not playing has something to do with why it fails, maybe it's just a coincidence

Your warranty is valid for the time period. So on RROD, it's 3 years. You could go through several systems, as long as it's during those 3 years, your covered.

Also, you won't get a straight answer on here as no one has one. Both these guys didn't play for a period of time and still got RROD. While I have had my system since launch and the ONLY RROD I ever got WAS after 8 straight hours of Oblivion. So there is no single answer to the question.

If you don't mind paying for peace of mind, I suggest buying the system at Best Buy and paying the $59.99 for a 2 year BB warranty. If it breaks, for any reason, there is no wait, just go exchange it, and yes they let you keep your harddrive :)

The MS CS person told me they re up your warrenty for every new or refurbished console you get. So if yours tanks 8 months down the road and you get another console, you're good for another 3 years *supposedly*

Im betting they'll pull the 3 year thing before to long.
