What exactly does a router do, because I have my 360 directly connected to my modem. My friends were telling me to buy one.

A router is for wirless conection or a wired. The wired connection would be just so u have more ethernet ports available. If you have your 360 wired directly to a modem than dont buy a router. It would be a waste of money cause if you got a wirless router than you would have to be the 360 network adapter ($100) Routers come in 2 kinds, wireless and wired. Dont get one, cause it dosnt seem like you need it right now.

While all that is true..a router is VERY useful when a PC is involved as it provides a firewall to protect your machine. So this will prevent any viruses or anything else getting onto your PC. The 360 doesn't have a lot of these issues, but you can still be exposed to a LOT of unnecessary traffic that might actually show up as lag on on-line play. Also, if your 360 is fairly close to the modem, you can buy a wired router for VERY cheap and get an extra layer of protection..

Since nobody actually explained it yet. The point of the router is to allow you to share an internet connection. With it, you can hook up a Computer, your 360, other computer, PS3 if you have one. They can all be hooked up at once & this way you don't have to unhook the 360 & hook up the computer to go on the internet. You can play Xbox Live & someone else can surf the net at the same time.

Router's are good, but I would not recommend the wireless adapter you can buy for the 360 it brings too much lag when you are playing games on xbox live!!!

another thing to note, i know if you have Comcast broadband, and have multiple things hooked up to your modem, they will call you up and say you're using multiple IP addresses and make you get a router or charge you more on your bill. happened to me back when i first got it

When you use a router, a single IP is connected to the modem and the ONLY way they can "assume" that you have multiple devices behind this router is if you are using a LARGE amount of bandwidth. Comcast was a little @nal initially, but they've come to the realization that people are going to use routers, so they don't bother you.
