Let it be known that I hardly know anything about the different version of the Xboxs.

I want to get a 360 for a cheap price to get a couple games this holiday. I know that the Arcade is only $200, but it has no hard drive and it doesn't come with memory cards. Does this mean I will have to buy a small 20GB hard drive to put on it, or can I buy an SD card to save a few games, or is their a small amount of internal memory that I could squeeze some saves on? First I just want to know if any of these are possible, and which would be the easiest/most efficient.

It does come with a memory unit (not sure if it is 256mb or 512mb), however the NXE update which just launched is compulsory and takes up 128mb. You really do want to get a harddrive, and buying it separately costs a lot more than just buying the Pro model in the first place. General advice from most people is just to ignore the Arcade - it exists only for advertising purposes so they can say you can get a 360 from $200 and compete with the Wii - not really necessary now the Pro is around the price of a Wii in the UK. You must use official 360 memory units or a 360 harddrive. You cannot use USB sticks, SD cards, external harddrives etc to store saves or other content. It makes sure MS sell their own official products at their inflated prices

Thank you for the info. However, I kinda wanted to stick with the Arcade since it's $100 cheaper. How much would a smaller hardrive run?

its comes with a 512 mb memory card, but I've noticed that if you get lucky and find a 20 gig hardrive at a gamestop the prices have dropped dramatically. I think it might be around 30 bucks.

The Pro comes with 2 games, a hard drive, a headset, and a network cable

Don't waste your money on an Arcade version

Well, those two game I don't really care for, plus *hides* I don't really plan on getting Xbox Live. I just want something that I can be able to get cheap, while also being able to save a few games on their.

If I get the Arcade, then a 64MB memory card seperately, will I be good to go?

If your not getting live there is no point in a hard drive. the arcade has a 512 MB memory card included you could have a save game for probably 700 games on that, so thats all you would need.

seriously though I don't know why you would want another memory card, they are so overpriced, and you can only get 512 mb ones in the store they are 50 bucks, like I said if you buy the arcade system you'll get a free 512 MB card that is included in the box. there is really no point in an extra memory card!

Microsoft is doing a deal where if you get a arcade and dont have enough space for the new live experience you can enter the serial number and console ID of the 360 and you can get a 20GB hard drive for $20

If I buy from the store then I'm set, as you are implying. I am going to check eBay as well though, no know I'll know to check. That's what I meant by the console and the memory card, sorry. :)

Well, lastly I'll say this, if you don't plan on having your xbox hooked up to the internet at all, then no hard drive is needed. but even if you get it and hook it up to your internet and only have a silver membership (thats the free membership) you'll want a harddrive for game demo's arcade games with free trials and hey you might want to purchase something, and very very very few games will fit on a memory card!

EDIT: I misread the TC's original post, which actually just asks about the Arcade machine's capabilities. I apologize for the premature lock. :)

I wouldn't listen to this, no offense but I wouldn't. Just because your not gonna be hooking up to the internet right away doesn't mean you don't need a hard drive. What if you want to install games to your HDD those take up an average of about 6GB you can't fit that on a memory card. Also if you want demos your not gonna be able to fit a lot on a memory card so your gonna want a hard drive for that also. So your best bet is just to spend an extra 100 dollars and get the 60GB Pro model. It'll save you money down the road to get a hard drive when you find out you need or want one.

What do you mean don't pay attention to me? hahaha You half way said exactly what I said! and if he doesn't connect it to the internet he won't be able to install the new dashboard in the first place, thats why I said if your not going to connect to the internet don't bother with a hard drive. but if you do, it would be better to have one, plus if you read all the above topics, he is trying to save every penny he can. 100 dollars may be something he just cannot spend!

Oh, additionally, I need to know about warranty. If I do purchase this on eBay, I wouldn't get the same warranty in the store. If I only plan to play every now and then for a little while at a time, do you think that the console will break on me? I now they break often, but I don't assume I will have much trouble if I'm not pushing it on hours. I ask this, because I know I'll probably get it even cheaper on eBay.

If you are going to buy one on ebay, the I'd look at the pro anyway. It will probably be cheaper than an arcade in the store. Bear this in mind though, it is likely that microsoft will force inclusion of the new dashboard(NXE) in future games. Probably first party games but it is likely to be there none the less. For now a memory card will suit your needs, but I really think you're going to need a HDD in a while. Check around for pro budles though, different stores have different exclusive bundles and they are really cost effective. And as previous posters have said, you may want to hook up to live later on in which case you will definately need one even if you only take the Silver Live account. Regarding Warranty, if you get a used one,so long as it hasn't been tampered or modded in any way, you will still get the 3yr extended warranty for RROD but the original 1 yr warranty will be void unless it is less than 1 yr old and comes with the original receipt of purchase. I would avoid getting a used one from Ebay unless it is a last resort. As with all electronic devices, you have no idea what it has been through before you get your hands on it. Get a new one, and my advice is to shop around for the best Pro bundle you can find. Good luck

hmm, I have looked at Pros, and I've be outbid every time, so that's why I looked into an Arcade. Also, what is the difference between the Silver and Gold? I have a wireless connection, so will the Xbox pick that signal up, otherwise I can't go online.

Also, will Microsoft begin to ship the 360s with the new dashboard?

And as for penny-pinching I am really cheap. :P So I have a small area to work in. I really just want a cheap Xbox that will allow me to play and save a few games I might be interested in, nothing that will make me a "true" owner. I mainly focus on my PS3 for demos, etc. As answered earlier, the Arcade system (and Memory Card) would be sufficient for what I need, I just want to know if I should take the risk and buy on eBay, rather than the stores. It's one of those pick and choose: More expensive=Better warranty or Less expensive=Weaker warranty.

If you want to get online wirelessly with the 360 then you'll need the wireless adapter which are expensive so I'm doubting you'll be getting one of those (no offense intended):P If you really are looking for the cheapest deal then I would suggest getting the Arcade from the store. I wouldn't trust and second hand one from Ebay as far as I could throw it. Future 360's will be released with the newdashboard installed, but I would expect that to be a little way off as the current stock would have to be sold first. This is why Microsoft are likely to force at least first party games to have the new dashboard on future releases and maybe even some third party ones. At least on the exclusives. They included previous updates on game disks and demo disks from official magazines so expect them to again

None taken. :) I have some thinking to do I guess, and most likely not go online. I would like it for Christmas, but I have asked for systems every year.

You can actually format any hard drive to work with the 360. I can't really say anything else, due to the ToS, but if you're looking into buying an arcade, that might be something you'd be interested in doing.

dude...just get the arcade version from the STORE. Looking for a cheaper deal on ebay is a waste of your time...199$ is pretty damn cheap.

Plus it comes with its own 256 mg memory card which will do the job if your not planning to go online.

And even if you do plan to go online, there are 50$ 20gb hard drives on sale on EBAY. Accesories are fine to buy on ebay, but youll definatley need a store bought console for the warranty to work (?)

Ok, buy the item form a store no online purchases for items like this, yes you get it cheaper, but you could get screwed for a warranty. also in order to use wireless inter net ou have to buy an extremely overpriced wireless network adapter (about 100 bucks) but if you have a routerthen you should be able to buy the cord and hook it up.

Xbox gold is something you buy, if you want to play people online then that is what you need only gold member gets to actually play games online and with other people

silver is free and you get it by just signing up, with this you get access to the microsoft market place(which is where you can find demos or arcade game trials, Xbox Orginals etc. ), friends list, voice and text chatting.

note: with gold you get all the features of silver along with.
