That is a good question in this day and age, unfortunately... especially with EA involved. But I can confirm that online play is fine to play if you buy it used. I can't remmeber if there were any pre-order bonuses or not, I don't think so to be honest, but the basics is all there. :)
To be honest, I don't think there are any games that require a code to play online. There are codes that "require"s you to either use that or download a BIG part of the game to be able to use... I'm looking at you, Skate 3.

No, it plays online for free. There is a VIP code that originally came with the new game that contained a few maps - useful to have, but not absolutely necessary to play.
Yeah the online is free if you buy used but you dont get the VIP code which cuts you out of a ton of maps. Which is real crappy considering their all on the disc already. Only real DLC for the game is the onslaught mode and it really isnt that great.
I just bought the game used and they put the disc into the Limited Edition box that had a VIP code behind the instruction manual and some other pamphlets... I just typed the code in expecting it to already be redeemed, but I guess I'm the first one to use it because I'm downloading the "Multiplayer Update 2" as I'm typing this.

Youre right, I downloaded the update and then found out the VIP code was already redeemed. I only plan on playing it for a week anyway and then returning it for a full refund to put towards Black Ops.
