I don't make the statement lightly. If the trailer itself doesnt completely amaze you watch some of their press releases. EVERYTHING is ingame... the engine even controls the terrain pixels. I think this thing will become a staple for video games and cut the dev time on so many future games in half. Incredible

Just wanted to inform some people. The tech demo was put together in2 monthsby a single person with occassional help from a few other people. The large majority of tech demos you see these days are put together by teams of 20-30 people over a period 5-6 months. Also, if you watch the demo and look closely at the canyon walls, you will see that thecliffs have a large variety of different textures and colors. Also, the road has a very high level of detail and variety. The character models are extremely impressive and the building textures are great. Also, the engine is supposed to use the same code to run on all 3 platforms meaning that one team can simultaneously develop for the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 without having to repeat the coding procedures over and over in different formats to account for the different hardware. This will allow developers more time to develop the actual content of the game and add more details, without having to worry about the actual coding. As a result you will see better games. Also, the megatexturing should not effect disk space or performance because they are rendered in a different way than typical textures and they can be compressed to very small amounts. An example is that 20GB of textures can be compressed to less than 500MB. This will allow for more varied and unique textures rather than constantly repeated textures. As a result games will look much more diverse and detailed.

No... in terms of technology CryENGINE 2 wins(So many featuresthat are amazing)but id Tech 5 wins in terms of sheer genius. If there is a god of programming, it is Carmack. Using the same code for 3 platforms is something absolutely unheard of. With UE3 and CryENGINE 2, you have to rewrite the code in different syntax in order to get it onto other platforms. As a result, games need more time being programmed and less time being developed. With id Tech 5, games are not ports, they are games that run perfectly on every system. Developers can spend more time actually working on the games and less time messing with the code. As a result, games will be better. id Tech 5 is the single greatest piece of programming ever created.

Looks like Carmack wasn't lieing when he said that his next game was going to be about Gameplay more than graphics (even ifid Tech 5 is absolutely insane). The racing, open world, FPS, adventure elements in a post-apocalyptic wasteland is extremely promising. I put this game at #5 on my list, only because it is so far off. I am looking forward to Bioshock, Crysis, Fallout 3 and Starcraft 2 more than this game only because I see them coming out before it. If this gets released mid 2008 then it would be way, way up there, but I expect it in 2009 sadly.

The Tech 5 engine looks great and is the next step in game engines. The texture mapping technology is impressive. But the charater models still look like the Doom 3 engine. Id really needs good artists for the character models.

If its the same code for all the platforms, does that mean a PC disc run in the 360. Hmm, nevermind I don't think that would work.

cry engine 2 is still the most advanced thing i'v ever seen. but floating around the internets are a bunch of comparison shots between DX10 and Open GL 2.0, and realy the open GL screens make you think "cryEngine who?". and for all yoiu who don;t know carmack does base all of his engines around the Open GL 3d rendering API, so i get the feeling that this engine under the right cercumstances could produce near photo realistic quality.
