quote:

"According to Carmack, the royalty fees to include a third disc in the Xbox 360 version would be so high that it simply isn't a feasible solution, with the programmer hoping for Microsoft to make a concession. He stressed that the issue is merely a storage problem and has nothing to do with the power of the Xbox 360 hardware, while adding that the PlayStation 3's Blu-ray format is Sony's one leg up on the competition.

Carmack also noted his belief that neither Doom 4 or Rage will be digitally distributed online, as id isn't looking into that sort of distribution for its major titles at this point."

wow if this game is 2 dvds ff13 is goin to be like 5 dvds damn microsoft and ur crappy dvds put in a hd dvd player and start put games on them

1) system wars 2) changing discs is not a sin 3) graphic quality would only strengthen from putting a game on more than one disc.

don't lie to yourself, it will look worse. in my opinion, the game should not be on 360. it really should be pc only, that would make the graphics stellar because they would have more people = more man hours working on one version of the game.

I don't know about you folks, but I'm not gonna buy it for XBOX if it's scaled down. Let's send that message to Microsoft, and show them it's in their best interest to cut id some slack here: http://www.thepoint.com/campaigns/microsoft-help-id-make-rage-look-good-on-the-xbox

Friggin' Carmack n' Company. Id sucks now. If they where so concerned about the quality of games then what the heck went wrong with Quake 4 or even better, Enemy Territory:Quake Wars. Every platform it sucked.

SO STUFF IT CARMACK!

BS. If they'd actually compress something it would fit on 1 disc. This is all BS to make the PS fanboys happy.

who cares about 2 discs and it looking slighty worse than a blue ray version, ur going to get a idea what it looks like off demos or videos on marketplace odds on. if thats bad then dont get it not like these rage / doom 4 games will be the best FPS on the 360 i bet they just good solid games , plenty of other games still look great on one disc. so being on 2 i think will be good coz its still going to look sweet. id never really had any major success porting they shooters as the proper console shooters usually end up top the legaue and only hardcore id fans end up getting the game in most cases

this is why I love it when people speculate that MGS4 might go to the 360. That would take up about 7 disks, seeing as how it could only just barely fight on the Bluray disk format. MS has a lot going for it, but the Blue-ray is just a lot better.

I love my 360 and im sad when i see all these fanboys bashing some one just reporting what he herd.

The reason it would look worse if it were cramed on 2 discs instead of 3 is the lack of space, so they have to take out some where and it will be in the attention to detail. Its not an issue of us haveing to change discs you have to be a complete bum to truly have a problem with that. 360 owners are just goin to be suffering when it comes to some multiplatform games, because of the shere size of the bluray disc. The size of the disc is the only thing sady that the bluray disc does have on the dvd disc as the PS3 has make up for other things. Owning a 360 just means we are goin to start having to make sacrifices on some things like this. Dont be surprised when M$ annouces a new console in the next year or two, even tho we still love this system. Trust me M$ probly did this on purpose to try to make more money. Lame.

Did everyone forget that with the fall update we will be able to install our games on the hard drive ? All Xbox 360 games will be able to be installed on the hard drive in a few more months . I would not expect Ps3 fans to know that .

First of all, we all knew that using regular DVD's would eventually be a problem. They simply do not hold enough material, and Blu-Ray's hold a ton more. I don't mind disc swapping during games like Final Fantasy... I would much rather get the graphical boost. Second of all, HD DVD is dead. No one is going to put an HD DVD player in a console because nothing is getting put out on HD DVD anymore. Microsoft did not do that when the 360 first came out because it kept the system more affordable than the PS3. If anything, the 360 would have to get a Blu-Ray optical drive, but I think we will have to wait until next generation for that. The other option would be to install a massive portion of the game onto the hard drive, and run it off of some combination of the hard drive and the discs. I believe they do this on the PS3. The problem there is hard drive space, as most 360's currently have a 20 gb hard drive. Thirdly, this thread is probably better suited for system wars.

Either is one huge game or the developers arent tallented at all. Oblivion used 7/10 of its disc space and 5/10 went to soundfiles, that was in 2006. Compression of soundfiles has improved since then. So the only thing I can think off is that this game has a lot of videos that arent made with the game engine. It's a luxery problem and its their own fault.

Theyll will have to fix it though, 360 makes up for more then 50% of the sales for most games and 360 owners but three times as much games as PS3 owners. They have to make it work for 360 just like every company had to make it work for PS2 back in the day.

As the first game developed using id Tech 5, id's new in-house development engine, Rage will run at 60 frames per second and will feature a massive open world, thanks to id's new megatexturing technology. There's so much world in the multiplatform game, in fact, that the content will not fit onto two Xbox 360 discs--some level of graphical fidelity will have to be sacrificed. Carmack said a three-disc version is simply not cost effective in terms of materials and manufacturing expenses, which are compounded by a hefty disc fee levied by Microsoft.

I don't think you guys are getting it. He is basically saying that it would look the same if it was put on 3 discs, but they have to cram it on 2 discs because 3 discs is too expensive.

Now my prediction is that MS will work with the producers on the royalty fees so that 3 discs will be affordable enough to make the game on. MS would not let another company get a AAA exclusive because of something like royalty fees.
