This microsoft "insider" stated in this article that the 360 is actually designed to be vertical. Now it obviously operates in either position.

But... from a reliability standpoint, when set up vertically, 2 of the 3 sides exposed to the air are the largest sides, giving the unit more of an ability to cool itself instead of being horizontal where one large side is only millimeters from whatever surface it is on, trapping heat beneath the unit.

And for those who say, standing it vertically blocks the largest vents and is harmful to airflow, again, this "insider" states the end on which the 360 standsis designed for air intake. Well, air only needs about an opening as thick as a sheet of paper to be drawn in, air is pretty thin.

Just my (well not actually mine) 2 cents on those on the fence about positioning of their unit. For the record, I have mine around my neck on a big chain like Flavor Flav.

Hmm, I dont think it matters which way its placed. As long as its not crammed into a corner where heat will generate.

Seemed when used to lay it horizontially, would heat up more and faster compared to vertically, for me.

that is interesting, but I keep mine horizontal, and it works just fine.

i layed mine horizontally for a year, the video card recently crapped out so i'm starting to think vertical is the way to go. Laying it does block a vent, but i just never felt comfortable putting the discs in the tray when its vertical.

I just lay mine horizontally on a grid- style, crisscross metal cookie tray. Lifts it about a half inch to an inch off the ground and allows my 360 to intake air from all sides =)

Never tried it vertically. Is it a pain to load the disc's that way?

No, it's not a pain to load disc's that way cause of the new benq dvd drive. As far as vertical, horizontal goes, i've had better luck with vertical.

I guess I'll just rotate the positions because for a couple of months of laying horizontal, I have gotten some system issues and weird noises. On vertical I get some disc reading issues, so I have put it back onto horizontal mode and so far so good for a couple of months.
