My old 360 had a 20gb hard drive and since I prefer installing my games after the NXE update, I want to get an Xbox with a bigger hard drive. I've calculated that my current game collection takes up 40gb of install space. Here's my question: How much usable hard drive space do the 60gb and 120gb provide (i.e. minus the system files etc that are required for the console to run properly)?

Even though I'm going over the limit, I always go with 5-10GBish less than what the size is told to be.

I only have an arcade version, but when you install games to a hard drive, does it mean that you don't need the discs to play em anymore?

Just buy a aftermarket laptop hard drive and swap it in. Cheaper and more room.

To answer the TC's question, when I got my 20 gig 360 at launch, I had about 13.5 gigs of space left with everything that was preinstalled on the HDD. I would assume that if you purchase a new xbox or get a new HDD that it will be between 7-10 gigs of pre-installed stuff. Now to ask TheSylntChamber, how do you plan to get that to work seeing how MS has made a specific HDD for use with the 360? Maybe it's me and I need to do some research but I don't see how buying a laptop hard drive will work in that situation.

No, you still need to put the disc in, it just runs quieter and slightly faster.

I don't have my 360 anymore. That's why I asked about Elite vs. Premium 60gb because I am going to buy a new one.

yeah I love when people speak of which they know nothing about. Ready to eat some crow? u can't just buy any aftermarket hard drive laptop hard drive then swap it with the xbox 360 hard drive and expect it to work. it just won't work like that. Xbox 360 uses a hard dive locking key and recognition system. so it IS IMPOSSIBLE to swap out the drive for a larger one. end of story, anyone who says they can make it works has yet to prove anything.

there is a way to do it but requires a mod. u need a specific hard drive (western digital BEVS) and do some modifications to it (google it) to make the xbox 360 recognize it. so basically if u want to swap it with a larger hard drive, u need to do some modification. u can't just buy a larger hard drive, swap it and expect it to work.

Wow so you had no idea what you were talking about, got called out on it, and typed it into google and read the first page that came about. Welcome to 07 when that info was current. There are different hard drives you can use now. Read up on all the info before you spread misinformation.

ok...if you're still sayin that u can just buy a aftermarket laptop hard drive and swap it in and it works, then prove it!!! where's your source?

like i said before, you cannot swap the xbox 360 hard drive with any laptop hard drive without modification. the only way to swap an xbox 360 hard drive with a non-official MS hard drive is by modifying it so the xbox 360 can recognize it.

Xbox 360 Hdd's will not be any bigger than 120GB, the only current 2.5" HDD that are sure to work is the WDxx00BEVS and to get thoose to work you'll have to read out a HDD key from another exsisting Microsoft xbox HDD, so thus there will not be any bigger than the largest current MS hdd! (aka 120GB!)

So you'll have to read/flash in a exsisting hdd key to get it to work, even if you can fit a 400GB it'll still be 120GB!

TheSylnt, get your facts rigth before you spread missinformation! ;)

Well, what do you think? Here are the possibilities: a) Yes, you will still need the disc. b) No, you don't need it. Microsoft loves piracy and wants you to steal games. Tough choice. To the TC: The 60 GB offers around 52 GB drive space.
