I don't have a ton of extra money to spend but I really want to get an xbox. I've been looking on craigslist for some and I've found a bunch for like $150-200 that come with all cords, at least one controller, maybe some games... etc. Is it a bad idea to go through craigslist? What should I be looking for to get a decent deal? I don't know too much about that, like what makes one xbox better then another (in terms of elite, harddrive, stuff like that). What should I ask sellers to make sure I'm not getting ripped off? Besides obviously trying it to make sure it works before I pay anything.

Thanks for the responses. I'm trying to get one within the next month or so.

I also don't want to risk getting one and having it break or something. Would it be better to just buy one new? I just don't really have that kind of money... Not sure what to do.

Alright helpful answers please... I've gone through craigslist for other things before just wondering if its worth it to get an xbox on there. I'm mainly worried about the red ring of death, dunno exactly how that randomly happens to some and i dont want to spend $150 on something that might just break and be useless

Craigslist is fine. Most people will be honest and give you what you bargained for because they don't want a lawsuit for false advertisement. I would make sure to check out the X-box (like if someone is selling near you) before you purchase it though....never know for certain with people these days.

Personally, I wouldn't because of the rampant RROD issue. This is true especially if you're not buying a slim. Even if you go and check to make sure the 360 is functional before you buy it, there are temporary ways of fixing the RROD that are only short lived. Why not buy a refurbished slim from a credible retailer?

I live near Akron Ohio where the guy and kid recently killed several people not to mention I know of at least 2 robberies so far this year with Craigslist meetings in my area.

If you really want a used Xbox 360 then at least Gamestop/EB games offer a 1 year replacement plan for used consoles. Worth getting if you are buying a used Xbox 360.

However if craigslist people are selling the Xbox 360 S 4GB slim. For $150.00 - $200.00 with 1 controller and a couple of games. Then buy it from craigslist, The Slim models are better than the Xbox 360 model 1.

Pawn shops may be a good option as well. Good luck on the Xbox search.

Same kind of craziness can happen with the newspaper classifieds or the local rag, pennysaver. Please don't implicate Craigslist.

Sure you gotta be safe but that has nothing to do with the source doing free advertising.

I wonder if you can't go out some Saturdays to some garage sales. Ask for a demo by bringing your own game.

Here are the things you want to check

1) Funny sounds when loading / unloading the disc and reading the game. Look for [Unreadable disc] error.

2)Try out Xbox live. Create the guest account and make sure the xbox isn't one of those that got permabanned.

3) Take the faceplate off. Make sure there is an intact manufaturers seal.

4) Sellers should be motivated to show you that everything is on the up and up. Try to pick up on obvious seller reaction indicating he is deceiving you. You know if he says "trust me" no need to try it out while not being able to look you in the eye, its one red flag against him or her. In general if he's acting nervous, somethings wrong with what he's selling and you need to bug out.

If you would rather not risk such precautions, you might just as well buy used from Gamestop. They guarantee it works. (Still unbox it in the store and have them plug it in) make their greedy business model work for the sale.

You would be better off buying a refurb from a retailer.

I think you would be better off buying your console NEW. Unless one is buying a console from a friend, I wouldn't trust a stranger or retailer for a used console (including best buy and gamestop). For me, I'm ok with buying used games, but when it comes to console buying, you may want to get the current consoles for this generation NEW. Like others have mentioned, the console could be banned from xbox live, maybe the person used all the free gold memberships and left you with none, maybe it doesn't run quietly anymore. Too many problems can occur. Is it because you don't want to spend $100+ for a bigger hard drive? Because there are ways around that. If anything, get the slim version for $200

When it comes to videogames, I only buy games used. It's always better to buy systems and controllers new. There might be people out there that just need the money or are not into the 360 anymore but there are far more people who find a problem with their stuff and try to dump it. My advice, go new. If you have to go used to save the money, do what others have said and try gamestop with a warranty. You'll avoid all kinds of potential headaches this way.

It's too bad you weren't looking during Boxing Week ... it was so cheap brand new.

Also, save yourself the stress and just buy it (a) new when there's a sale, (b) used from a friend, or (c) used from an authorized retailer with an adequate warranty.

I wouldn't buy used if I were you but if you really insist buying it used at least go to GameStop/EB Games and get a used one there, you'll get the 1 year replacement warranty.

If you are going to buy it used, at least buy it somewhere they have some kind of warranty, just in case it breaks. I'd recommend buying a new one though.
