Am I out of luck, or is there anything I can do about this? Worth trying to repair it professionally?
Thanks for any advice.

There are many guides on Youtube which help you step-by-step on how to fix the RROD. If you feel confident enough to pull apart your own system, you can try this. Or you could just send it in to get fixed, and pay the amount it costs. It's up to you buddy.

Microsoft will repair it in about 4 weeks for $99 with it being out of warranty. You could also check with places that sell games locally and get a referral to someone who can do the repairs quicker, but probably at the same price point.
My recommendation? Sell it on Craigslist with cables/controllers, etc. for $100 - make sure you disclose that it has the RROD. Someone out there will be willing to buy it and fix it. Take the $100 and put it towards an XBOX slim.

Yea go with this. Its really not hard to fix it yourself and very inexpensive. Here at work we purchase broken xbox and ps3 off ebay and repair them. Buy an xbox for $30-$40 and make it like new and even better than before cause its protected from a future RROD.

Curious here. How are they protected from future RRODs?

Heat flow, which causes the problem to begin with, is fixed. Thats not to say it won't red ring from video failure or something, but the over heating problem is corrected.
I agree with this. Or you could do the little trick where you remove the HDD from the casing and put it inside the expansion bay to the side of the Slim. That's what I did and it works perfectly :DI advise you buy the 360 slim and copy ur harddrive over
