So here is the deal, I can spend up to three hundred dollars on an Xbox 360 and one game. My plan was to purchase a core system off of ebay - preferably new - and looking at the auctions I think I could get one for about $200. However today at work, a co-work of mine reminded me of red ring death, and said that it was still a prevalent problem with the system and I shouldn't buy one without a warranty. I'm trying to save as much money as possible - it's kind of tight at the moment so if I can do it for less then tree hundred it would be great - while still getting the console and one game.

So my question is, is getting an xbox off of the ebay too much of a gamble, and would it be better to try and get a new one or a used one that has been proven to work. My other option is a refurbished one from gamestop for 200, but for some reason I don't like that idea.

also... Halo, Mass Effect, or Assassin's Creed for a first game?

Make sure you get the warranty. I'd go for halo 3 as a first game, or Mass Effect if your not gonna be playing online.

a refurbished xbox from gamestop would be a better idea than one off of ebay , i used to work there and they will get you a warranty to protect you against the rings, ebay is a great company but there are some people that want to rip you off. as far as games go all those you mentioned are very good.

I'd keep saving personally, you really need a hard drive with the console. If you have Live Halo would be a choice I guess. Mass Effect is good no matter what.

I was thinking of get hard drive later, I don't think I'd use the online functionality very much so it's not really a necessity, unless there's another reason to have one?

I wouldn't even consider buying an Xbox 360 without a warranty. It has good games, and you are able to do a good deal of stuff with it, but the console is built pretty cheap and it will amost always break at some point. Mass Effect is your best bet. It has the best replay value by far, and is a great game.

1 reason to have a hard drive:

Some games require it. Forza 2 no HD no career mode. Halo 3 for the replay features. Game updates new maps etc....

SAVE for another month.

I would'nt buy a 360 off ebay. Better to have a warranty then to be sry. The games you listed are all extremely good, but i would also add Call of Duty 4 to the list - fantastic game. If you hook up your 360 with Xbox Live, you can create a silver membership which is free, but you don't get to play online with/against people. With a silver membership and a Harddrive you can download game demo's off the marketplace. And some games do have extra content that you can download in exchanced for MS points (Xbox Live currency).

This guy is right. Having a 360 without a hard drive is like having a computer without one. It's pretty useless without one and a memory card for a core system will run you $50 anyways. Hold off until you can afford a Pro System that comes with everything you need instead of getting nickel and dimed for it later.

You'd best go with a refurbished console from Gamestop/EB Games because they still have warranties and who knows what people have done to their 360s from Ebay. Halo 3 would be a great game for a starter. Read my sig.

you could get an xbox off ebay and when you get the system you can register it or see if it is registered, and then call microsoft and pay $50 for i think 2 years. so still get a xbox off ebay. if you get 360 in march get a new game rainbow six vegas 2, army of two, or battlefielld bad company, and if you get it soon get assassins creed. if u get live get gears of war or halo3

Microsoft has recently addressed the rrod problem by extending all 360 warranties to 3 years. All 360s are still covered.

take the 360. if something is wrong with it, call 1-800-4MY-XBOX. They'll probobly try to tell you the warranty has expired. that is a lie. i work at Gamestop and we are actually not allowed to sell warranties on the 360 bc they just extended it theyr warranty. once they tell u the truth theyll send u a box and u send it to them. theyll send it back in a few weeks. ive seen it more than once.

the three year warranty through microsoft is valid no matter how many owners the console has had. all they ask for is the serial number which is on the back of the console. a friend of mine bought a busted 360 called microsoft immediately and had his shipping box within a week.

I "think" all 360's are covered under RROD, I'd call 800-MYXBOX, say you have the RROD, give serial number and see if they'll send you a coffin, you can always call back in a few days to say it works. That way you know your covered.
