Achievements give games longevity.Korps14agreed, there are some downsides but it's giving the most out of a game.

Actually... achieving high scores were at the center of video games in the early days. Since then, we've just had better technology to allow us to get more in-depth.. we don't necessarily need the motivations of better scores anymore to hold our interest in games. This is really no different, its sort of a universal score on the 360. By all means though, if achievement whoring is your thing, then that means you are deriving some amount of fun or satisfaction from it.. and thats what games are about, so theres nothing wrong with it really. Unlock away!
Ahhh yes the days of no acheivements. The time where nobody cared what u did in your game. The time where u would spend hours on the net find cheat code after cheat code. The time where u would just finish the game and move on with life and buy another game. Now..........u have to spend hours and hours and hours of searching and shooting and turning your XBOX on and off and on and off. AGHHHHHHH!!!! all because u feel all fuzzy inside when u hear that little *beep* on your TV and flashy tights ion your controller.
Achievements are great. My main focus is still playing a game for the enjoyment so i dont worry about achievements the first time i play it. That way i have something to come back to in the game after i complete it instead of just putting it oneside till whenever i feel like playing it again.
I totally agree, except for one game, I play the games for fun and then go back through and try to get the achievement points to try and get some more longevity out of the game.

Thats exactly right for me too. I play the game because i want to, if its a really good game that i'll enjoy going through multiple times, then i'll work on the achievements. If its a really bad game that im not enjoying at all, then i dont play it. Simple as that. I know alot of people do, but i wont play a game JUST for the points.
I do enjoy achievements. They do create an additional element to give games longevity. On the other hand, I get annoyed sometimes when the pressure of getting achievements effects gameplay. For instance, in Mass Effect there are achievements for playing the majority of the game with certain characters. This sucks because if I were to do that, it would effect how the game is played and ultimately my enjoyment. Personally, I'm more interested in playing the game my way instead of just trying to get achievements.JFRocker
AGREED! I was so disapointed when I saw Mass Effects acheivement point list. Very lame. I like how Halo 3 and Bioshock had their points system: you get most through one play through. Dead Rising was another horrible list of achievements, SO many tedious little crappy ones ... no point in even trying those.

If they just hand them to you then they wouldn't be achievements now would they? I really wish MS gave developers the option of not including achievements. Too many people obsess over them.

No, actually, some people still play games for fun. And there have always been those that played to "getz da beta skorezz!". Why do you think games like Asteroids and Pac-Man kept score for you? I remember being young, playing in an arcade and being impressed when I made it to the high score list.
So achievements are nothing new really, in terms of what you are talking about. It does however offer new challenges to those that are interested. Some people do both. Like me, I play for fun, but also use achievements as a challenge indicator. I feel a sense of accomplishment when I unlock a challenge I have been trying to do (or just unlock it from playing)...its a very satisfying experience.
I agree that acheivements give games longevity... Also remember that a lot acheivements correspond to easter eggs, or collecting all of the ___'s in the game. Someone mentioned GTA San Andreas and getting all the tags etc... think about if it had acheivments... the game would let you know when you had gotten all the tags, and you'd not only get 100% completion but you'd get gamerpoints as well...
Also some of the acheivements maybe tedious or hard to accomplish, but sometimes after you accomplish one of them, it gives you that "Holy S#!@ I can't believe I just did that!" feeling.
Oh, brother. :roll:destinhpark
Looking at your gamertag I can tell you fall into the group of people the OP is talking about. Avatar? I can only wonder why you on earth you have that game. It wouldn't have anything to do with 1000 points in under 5 minutes (which you have) now would it?

True. People are buying crappy games just for the points. I don't get why though. I mean, the points are useless. I remember when gaming was about the gameplay. Not the useless points you can get in them. I could see if you could use the points for something.

I still play for fun achievements are just a bonus.
I really tried to enjoy my new Ps3 but having played through Assassins Creed on it to completion, I get this nagging thought in the back of my mind that I wish I had gotten it for my 360 so I would have the achievements.....
Currently playing though Mass Effect now and everytime I hear that plink plonk achievement noise I just feel sooooo good.....
I am hoping the PS3 trophy's are going to be fun to get..... but being already well into my 360 achievements, it may well be too late for me :(

It doesn't comepletely change on how you play the game. Characters have their strengths and weaknesses, but in overall gameplay, it doesn't force to play a particular way to succeed.
If you want to play a game that forces you to play a specific way to unlock achievements, look up F.E.A.R. or Gears of War.
First of all, I play a game for the sake of playing the game. If there are achievements that I unlock while I progress through the game, great, but if there are achievements that force me to play a certain way, or go flag hunting, forget about it. Like I'm going to waste my time running around collecting 420 flags for 105 gamerscore points that in the end, amount to nothing.

Or the times before the internet when you had to go to the local bookstore and get magazines that had cheat codes in them. That would just be us older folk.
Achievements actually give me incentive to play games, instead of buying them and never playing them as I always used to, or I would simply play it once and never go back.
I've tried going back and playing certain games on old consoles and I don't really have fun.

Only to lamewads who can't appreciate games for what they are. Since the NES days games have always had "extras", "secret areas" and "non-essential bonuses". Did you actually play THROUGH mario...or did you just play the first 6 levels and use a warp flute to get to the end? To me, gamerscore points is just a lame way to brag about something not really worth bragging about.
If you like a game enough to play it through several times and release some extras great! If you liked a game, but chose to move on to another one, so be it. If you want to do just "the main quest" or you desire to do "side quests" then that it your choice as a gamer.
But c'mon, worrying about achievements and gamerscores is the lamest thing in gaming right now. Especially when you get stuck playing online with some jackarse who isn't bothering to play the game properly because all he's doing is trying to open some obscure achievement.

Yep, so I got it from Gamefly to get a gew quick points. Sue me. Raising Gamescore's fun and addicting.
Like I'm the only person, too. Thousands of people rented this game to get the 1,000 points. I see it everywhere. Big deal.

Some acheivements totally wreck a good online game experience because the focus for some of these people becomes the acheivement rather than the game.

All about the ego boost. Even an acheivement in a video game can make someone feel better about themselves. Especially if they aren't into other self esteem boosting activities like sports I can see how it becomes important to some.
