I have left 4 Dead and its freakin awesome! (it could use more maps) anyways i saw a preview for resident evil 5 but I've never played any resident evil game before..i know its sad. hahaha Whats better???hulksmash4
I am playing Resident Evil 5- got it yeaterday- played for 30 mins or so yesterday noght. Looks pretty awesome to me. Only thing is reload time of weapons is a bit slow but as far as I understand you can buy enhancements for everything with the money you get from dead zombies...

L4D is more of a fast pace run and shoot em game. RE5 is a story with unique bosses and a little slower. Not saying slower as it is not as action packed or anything, your just not going to be running down the street unloading clips into zombies coming from all directions. RE5 is you have to find like 10-20 bullet packs at a time so you have to make sure your aim is good ect...has puzzles and will stop for cinematics.
I don't think one is better than the other, it is just depending one what game style you want to play.
