If, like me, you are an adamant RPG fan, then maybe you are also disappointed with this gen's efforts. The only really decent RPG I have found was Lost Odyssey. I mean, the likes of Blue Dragon and Infinite Undiscovery were OK, but that's at best. Maybe the fun is in turn based RPG's? As, IMO, since we moved onto scalable battles in real time, the quality of the story and or fun have slowly decreased, with most being conveyed as RPG games just turning out to be Hack 'n' Slash........i.e. DA II. At the moment I am playing KoA: Reckoning, which tbf, is pretty decent. But again, it still seems to be lacking that extra something to make it a truely great title. Bring back the days of FFVII I say and all will be right with the world............

This gen (and last one too) RPGs are awful compared to the genesis/snes era.

Agreed.

I miss my Breath of Fire type of RPG's. (not dragon quarter tho, it sucked)

They need to combine Breath of Fire 1-4 and make the best old school rpg this gen.

The JRPG genre has been fading, but there are some really great western RPG's on the 360. Oblivion and Skyrim are excellent RPG games...Fallout is a big success as well. And while I'm not a big fan of the Mass Effect series, a lot of people seem to love it.

I love all the games you mentioned, but compared to the JRPG style of games, they are no rpgs (contain elements but these are non defining).

Oh hell yes.....Breath of Fire games were amazing! Especially #3.....Peko - a playable character that was AN ONION hahahaha. And yeah, obviously Fallout 3 is another I forgot to mention! I'm thinking about picking up Tales of Vesperia, can get it fairly cheap now

Vesperia is a great game. Battle system is a bit slower than the rest, but still a great game with likeable characters.

The Witcher 2 is the best RPG since Lost Odyssey, and it's better than LO.

Also, I'm still wishing (hopelessly) for a Chrono Cross reboot.

If you haven't played Jade Empire, its backwards compatible on the 360 and a gem of a game.

No, it actually doesn't.

It needs to be explored more.

I'd prefer some large production old-school, turn based RPG's as well to make a return somehow. But there is room for both, especially since there is still tremendous potential for hybrid RPG's.

I'm not disappointed in this gens handheld RPGs, but for the 360, yeah, kind of meh. But go play Tales of Vesperia.

Totally agree! Turn based can be VERY fun games.....I say keep exploring. No problem with variety, if anything you should embrace it, not reject it
