Fellow gamespotters, Where have all the long, deep RPG's gone? I realize that the RPG market is turning more and more condensed main quest lines and fills in the rest with numerous shorties, but I miss the old style of RPG that literally was ana ccomplishment once you finished it, you know, the ones where finishing it might not have been a foregone conclusion. One great example is Final Fantasy X, I distinctly remeber the main quest of this game taking me roughly 60-70 hours on the main questline, with 30-40 hourse of additional gameplay, nowadays, your lucky if a main questline last 20-25 hourse with additional 15-20 hourse gameplay. Now, I realize that games use the download market of xbox live and expansion packs for the PC version to great effect to enhance these shorter RPGs but what happened to the days when all that times worth of content was already present and I didnt have to pay for it. I guess what it boils down to for me is this: RPGs, when done right tell a beautiful story in which you get to take part in but nowadays all im getting is a well done redux if im lucky. I flat out miss the imersion I was able to achieve under the old regime of 'mammoth' games but i guess that is the price we pay for the lastest gen RPGs. But I wish it wasnt so! God Bless

I know this is a 360 forum but, if you have a PS3, try Demon Souls. It's very challenging and it reminds us what old RPGs used to be like.

I find it sad as the original poster said, we do not see long RPG's anymore. Heck I love FF8 and FF9 I am playing both now for the hell of it, and I just love the time you have to put into the games just to get to the second disk. I think that (as said) that a ton of RPGs are now on handhelds. Pokemon is a leading example, and I have recently seen Dragon Quest now for the handheld and a recent Fire Emblem game. I think the best RPG out for the 360 right now is friggen Lost Odyssey and that came out about two years ago. Dragon Age Origins is linear, and Oblivion was just purely amazing but its old now. I believe... We must await for the lord of RPGS to emerge... ELDER SCROLLS SKYRIN!

I think there are a lot of rpgs out there for me. Magna Carta 2 looks like a good rpg. I like FF13 but I am stuck at a boss thats just overly powered and I gotta do some lvling. Theres the Mass Effect series but I havn't played that yet but I hear its good. Theres a Tales of game that I havn't played either and Fable 3 is out now if you like that series. I just got a 360 so theres many games out there for me to play. And to the above poster a Linear game don't make them bad games just Linear. Rpgs are about the story and the battle system if you have those two elements then you have the making of a great rpg game.
