I am thinking it took microsfot so long to announce the three year deal because they wanted to solve the problem first. I am guessing if they didn't have a solution for the RROD problem they wouldn't have announced the extended warranty. It wouldn't make much sense to announce that your system has a problem and you are extending the warranty, and then continue to pump out faulty consoles.

From what I hear it's the gpu that has the heat problem. But the new 65nm cpu will still help. I think they atarted a lot #0734 being mfged in august. So keep a look out because there are still old units out there. If you really want a falcon look at the lot#, the mfg date and check for a 175w psu.

Buy one anyways. They rarely break now. I got mine last Cristmas and it only broke once. And it wasnt even because of the RROD. It was because a friend broke my disc drive.

rrod is not gone for ever, and i actually doubt that it is possible for it to be gone forever. some consoles are always going to break. but the rate of getting rrod is much less now, compared to the 40% or so that the first batch of consoles have, which still continues to increase as time goes on. it still has about a 5% rate, and it will prob increase with some time. but with all this being said now is the time to buy the 360 if you really want one because the rate is probably as good as it will ever get. just make sure you get one of the falcon units. if you are so concerned with reliability being an issue though, you should consider the ps3 or wii since they rarely break unless you actually try to break them. but if you take good care of your stuff the 360 should last you at least a year or so before it breaks.

I read in a magazine that the new falcon chip almost completelt eliminates the red rings of death

The problem is its not one problem u can get it for any problem which is sever enough to warrent a repair for instance i dropped my xbox on the stairs on launch day ( yeah i suck ) and it cracked the motherboard ( stated on the letter i received from the repair centre )and i got the red rings of death.

The new falcon 360's definently run cooler. The main cause of the RROD is the GPU comming unsoldered due to exses heat. The new GPU has a copper heat pipe feed to a secondary heatsink. RROD gone forever, no. However, I bet these new falcon motherboards will have a lower failiar rate for sure.

the red ring will never be gone completely, but it has decreased substantially enough that i think you should be safe getting it with little to no worry

basically, its the vast majority of the causes is caused be the system over heating causing something inside the 360 to deform or melt which makes it unable to operate

It's actually very, very hard to find old ones, at least in CA, there isn't one store in the L.A. area that has any old ones, oldest I've found in CA was 802
