How to avoid the RROD? Don't buy a 360... simple. Seriously, you can't do much to avoid it... it will either happen or it won't.

install to Hard drive keep it horizontal I put feet on mine even though theres no vent no the bottom (horizontal). Got to home depot and i use some type of plastic caps i found in hardware. it just sits on them. Keep you 360 in an open area not in a cabinet. (that sucks)

there are few things you can do, they are pretty effective though. 1) invest in a cheap usb laptop cooler (~10$, get one from monoprice.com), put your 360 on it, plug it to usb port, your 360 sits horizontally obviously, go for laptop coolers with 2 or 3 fans. this will maximize air flow , pushing air inside from the bottom vents, if you've noticed that's the part that gets very hot. 2)Don't turn off your console right away after you're finished playing, exit to dashboard and leave it there for 15-20 minutes, let the fans cool down the console then turn it off, if you shut it down right away, the fans will stop while hot air is still in there, baking your console's gpu. I do both of these to my PS3 slim too, can't risk really, I heard horrible things about them too.

I've heard that coolers aren't good for 360s since they take power away from the console.

But number 2 seems interesting. I'll have to start trying that.

If you've got a sturdy surface, bottle caps work as feet quite well. And, I really don't know much about the machines themselves, but don't some models have less RROD trouble then others? I've heard mixed reviews about Jasper models having less errors in that realm. Though, as you HAVE an Xbox, and aren't in the MARKET for one, that really might not help
