Yes. It's the survival bonus. You'll get it back though. Oh, and yeah, the survival bonus effects how much your skills increase. So death=worse status. Not dying=more status
it's not that big of a deal. It's only by a little bit. And if you're truly horrible at the game, you can always go level in easier places or play online to get help.
