Saints Row: The Third, a review in the latest Game Informer Australia, page 62. There's a pic that reads "Remember when GTA was fun?" I think Rockstar had lost the plot since GTA San Andreas, as their following games were rather bland. I thought GTA IV was terrible, and tales from Liberty City? Okay, the "Ballad of Gay Tony" was alright, the "Lost and Damned" was just that, horrible. Then came LA Noire, another disappointment, Motion Scan technology alone cannot make for a great game.
I really enjoyed the shenanigans and buffoonery ( fun )of Saints Row 2, i pre-ordered the next. How can Rockstar forget to deliver on all that fun in gaming is a complete mystery to me.
Saint's Row is the way sandbox games of that nature should be, allowing the player to choose to play as male or female - something Rockstar has never done - allowing you to choose how you wish to play and letting you just have fun in the way you want to have fun. Being able to play as female in such games is refreshing and the amount of fun is refreshing after the bland GTABore, sorry, 4.
The GTA games started to become stale very quickly with the same tiresome male lead, the same tiresome story of redemption/revenge and the lack of choice as a whole.
Games don't need realism, that's for real life, games should just be over the top, tongue in cheek fun and allowing the player to choose for themselves.
Also the character creation is such a welcome thing, it allows for a lot of creative effort.

What kind of a parent lets there kid plays a game like saints row or GTA?
Looks pretty damn fun, might pick up the second one to see how it plays.vp22Don't, it's horrible. Has way too many technical problems to enjoy.
I prefer that there's gender choice, it invites female gamers to be able to play the game and be able to play as female for a change -something very rare in gaming - instead of the usual two fingers up to female gamers while forcing yet another bland generic male.
Male leads are always so bland and dull, always the same old stereotype. It isn't inviting for female gamers and continues to make gaming look immature and incapable of growing beyond the whole 'boy's only club' mentality.
It's one of the reasons why I play so few games anymore is dull to the over-abundance of boring, stereotypical male leads and boring stale ideas that bring nothing new to gaming.
Saint's Row 2 finally did what the first game should have done and what Rockstar's games should do, what all games of that nature should do as well as pretty much all of gaming - it had gender choice and invited female gamers to play the game, to want to buy it and play it instead of sticking two fingers up and doing the whole 'boys only!' nonsense.
If gaming is to be ever truly accepted then it needs to grow up beyond the male only mentality, invite female gamers to play the games by having gender choice for the main lead and allowing for new ideas that aren't the same old thing time and time again.
I've played and completed Saint's Row 2 as female only several times and found it to be so refreshing and so much more fun than it can ever be with a generic male.
The female voice actors for the female MC put more energy and life into the voices than their male counterparts do and the game feels right with a female character than it does with male.
I'm looking forward to creating the female MC in Saint's Row 3 and having fun, with so few games that are actually inviting to female gamers and have gender choice then it will be a refreshing breath of fresh air in a very stale industry.
And there have been so few games out this year that have allowed for playing as female and it looks like it's going to keep being that way, so my game choices are very few and far between. Bring on Saint's Row 3, and being able to play as female for a change instead of yet another bland and generic male only like so many games.
Reading your post I was struck by 3 very apparent things. And all of them are, You're kind of a bigot. I know, I know, You're a woman and this industry treats you like an idiot, that's been well documented. But I'm afraid that this sort of behavior has created in you, some sort of reverse sexism. Every time you say the word "Male" is either prefix or followed by a negative comment. Every time. Usually it's the words "Generic." And while I will agree that most video games have the same male protagonist, in the case of SR2, you are wrong.
Because the Women of SR2, deliver the exact same lines(for the most part)as the male counterparts. I know this, because I played through the game as a woman, too. I played through as a black man, an english guy, a puerto rican guy, and a white woman. And other than the accents, nothing about the script changed between them. They all delivered the same lines, in the same manner. And don't even get me started on the clothing. I mean, you can make the girl dress classy, but you'd only be putting on like, one or two outfits.
If you want to say that SR is better because it gives woman the chance to make a character rise to the top of a criminal orginization and own the world, then I agree. If you love SR because it makes it possible for you to feel more of a connection to said character because you were able to construct them in your own likeness/or a likeness you found more approving, agreed.
But if you're trying to say that SR isn't as sexist as every other game on the market, and in some ways more so, I'm afraid I've gotta call your bluff. Because while they may do things for female gamers that others don't, at the same time, they're doing what others do in much bigger ways.
You know? Prostitutes. Generic Female type stuff.
