Well I couldn't find a link because the web was full of the custom game glitch in the Halo 3 beta, but I do remember reading something that would allow you to host custom games that would let anyone online be able to find and join.
If you haven't played the Halo match making then I could understand why you would like the lobby/room feature better, it makes you feel that you have more control over what you want. However, the Halo matchmaking is nothing like the Socom auto-join/matchmaking. The auto-join in Socom just throws you an any random room, but the matchmaking in Halo offers very diverse forms of game play, and you can easily chose what you want to do. You can play deathmatches, team deathmatches, objective games (capture the flag, plant the bomb, kill the carrier, juggernaut, V.I.P. ect., the list is too long for me to go on for objectives.), team objective games, and these gametypes come in 2v2 4v4 and 8v8. Not to mention all of the other gametypes like team snipers, team swat, team training (unranked), and there are others too that I can't think of right now, and they are all in the matchmaking system that ranks you against people who are at a similar level as you (except team training, no ranking for that one). Now there are minor things in the matchmaking that you still can't control, but it doesn't make it less fun, or annoying. Personally I think it keeps it fresh and interesting, but that's just my opinion, and if you do come across something that you don't like, you can veto it. I probably made that sound more complicated than it actually is, but it's an easy thing to use. I love matchmaking in Halo and I would never want to go back to something like Socom because of it. Also on the off chance that you did, don't think that the Halo matchmaking is like the gears matchmaking, they are completely different.
