With the recent release of Dead Space and halloween upcoming i would like to revisit the age old topic of what do you think are the scariest games ever?

Heres my top 10

10. Resident Evil 4 (Gamecube)
Capcom comes up strong with this one. Refrigerator Man, the chainsaw guys, and shooting the water before killing the fish boss are the most memorable scares.

9. Dead Space (Xbox 360)
This game gets an A+ for having the creepiest atmosphere of any game. The first few scares are pretty good especially having you running for your life in the start of the game. The scare tactics got predictable at the end however.

8. Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly - Director's Cut (Xbox)
Any game that forces you to get as close as possible to ghosts so you can take a picture of them. The games main weapon is a camera that traps ghosts.

7. Condemned: Criminal Origins (Xbox 360)
Fighting crack heads in the dark with rusty pipes and 2X4's with nails sounds like the perfect formula for a scary game. Fighting your first fake mannequin in the old department store is sure to make you mess your pants. And last but not least the creepy visions make up the most memorable scares. Unfortunately the second game had better gameplay but was not scary and felt like it took a complete 720 from the original games story.

6. FEAR (PC)
Alma's sudden appearance at the end of hallways, in air ducts you were crawling trough, on the ceiling, behind you, and everywhere she managed to get always scared the biscuits out of you. This game also gets kudos for having the most elaborate and interactive scary visions of any game.

5. Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem (Gamecube)
The creepy story and sudden environment changes always kept you on the edge of your seat. There is nothing like exploring a creepy mansion while trying to keep ypur character from going insane with fear. This game had the best scare tactics by making you thing your game was scratched, blacking the screen out while surrounded by enemies, and making you think you game save was erased.

4. Doom 3 (Xbox)
Hearing babies crying while running from a demon down a blood soaked hallway was a common occurrence in this game. The most memorable thing about this game was the fact that you could not have a flashlight and your weapon out at the same time. You fought most zombies and demons in a almost completely dark room 87% percent of the time.

3. Resident Evil (Gamecube)
The first time you see that zombie look at you while its eating you fallen comrade you realize this is not the same game you played back on the PS1. The creepy camera angles and the Barry Sanders like moves you had to pull of to run away from zombies usually made you dread seeing the undead. After encountering your first Crimson Head you always made sure you decapitated every zombie head after killing them.

2. System Shock 2 (PC)
A beautiful and horrific merger of Doom and Half-Life, this amazing game was one of the firsts to offer open-ended character development with seemingly infinite choices of how your character leveled up. As the seemingly only surviving crew member of your ship (with your only ally being main enemy the Artificial Intelligence SHODAN) you had to kill countless enemies know as the Many. System Shock 2 bled real psychological terror with hundreds of dead infected crew members trying to rip your face off while they beg you to kill them. The extreme lack of ammo had you searching everywhere for more ammo while listening to the crew member's audio logs telling the ghastly tale of what happened to them. Did i mention the terrifying psychic monkeys with their oversized exposed brains? System Shock 2 can be seen now as the game that spawned Bioshock and Dead Space.

1. Aliens vs. Predator 2 (PC)
AVP2 offered 3 separate campaigns; Human, Alien, and Predator. Playing as the Aliens and the Predators was fun and highly exhilarating. Playing as a human however, was sheer terror. This game was hella dark, literally pitch black in most parts. Most of the time the only light you had was your flares and flash light. Running backwards throwing flares while hearing dozens of facehuggers skittering all around you is one of the most terrifying aspects of the game. Fighting against the warrior Aliens is a nightmare, They are all black and blended in with the walls and almost everything. Not to mention the fear when you hear the infamous blipping of your motion detector while you see the Aliens coming at you from everywhere. The horror doesnt stop there since they could crawl on the walls and ceilings and through air ducts and even under you. The Predators, as most of you know, have their stealth ability. You know they are out there and you can hear them but you cannot see them, until you get nailed with a spear and they charge you like a demon. As a kid going into the 7th grade I bought this knowing it was probably going to be scary (they gave you a coupon for a free pair of underwear because they guarantee you were going to soil yours) but i had no real idea what I was in store for.

Resident Evil for the gamecube is the scariest game i've ever played. It made me so uncomfotable that I had to stop playing.

Bioshock is another game that frightens me.

Fatal frame games are scary as hell. I would love to see them on Xbox originals but the most scariest game is Imagine: Teacher on the DS.

Resident Evil for the PlayStation 1 was pretty scary when it came out since the graphics of the mansion were pretty good, it had a lot of scary camera angles, and the music was atmospheric. Plus, the cut-scenes of zombies eating people were pretty graphic for the time. So was Silent Hill, since it was the first game I played that had that camera movement (like when you walked down a alleyway, the camera would tilt/pan to a dutch angle shot).

5-The Thing (XBOX)

4-Resident Evil 4 (Gamecube)

3-AliensvsPredator 2 (PC) You're right about this game, playing as the humans was terrifying.

2-Doom 3 (XBOX)

1- Dead Space (PS3) I know it's the new guy on the block, but I love this game. It may not be the scariest but the games atmosphere and design is unmatched.

More survival horror in space please!

I found Resident Evil 4 boring and in terms of being scary.... it was just your run of the mill action game. Bioshock was wonderful, great atnosphere, one of the best scariest games was Silent Hill and Doom 3, it's a different kind of scare though between the two games.

Fatal Frame 2

Fatal Frame 3

Every Resident Evil.. except the 4th, I just didnt find that one scary at all.

Silent Hill 2

Silent Hill: Home Coming

Eternal Darkness

ObsCure had its "OH CRAP" moments and the atmosphere was actually creepy.

FEAR

FEAR files

Condemned

Condemned 2

Sneak King - that burger king game.... and the only reason being, the burger king guy is extremly creepy.. and you get to look through his mask which makes it even MORE creepy. XD

Manhunt

I know that I am missing a ton.

I dont wanna put them in ranking, because i dont know which spot each of them should be at, so ill just mention those i really liked and that got me jumping, and which had a very on your edge kind of atmosphere.

AvP 1, playing as a human in those games gave the most scares because you could identify with that species :) And avp 1 was just brutal, especially the original release which didnt have the save feature during missions.

AvP 2, once again, superb scary game.

Doom 3(pc version), love doom 1 and doom 2, classics, but i loved the direction doom 3 went. One of the best atmospheres ever in a game in my mind.

Condemned 1, that game really scared me, with its silent ambiance and then suddenly some of the most brutal sounds ever, very frightening game. I havent played the full condemned 2 game, only tried the demo, but from what i read and experienced in the demo, then i wasnt happy about that series going into a more paranormal area. It was more nice when it was trying to be realistic.

A mention to thief 3, great game, and with one of the most beautifully crafted horror levels in a game to date.

And another mention, this time to the new Alone in the Dark game. Going around in central park in that game always had me on the edge.

I got Condemned for the PC because i thought it looked like a good crime scene/forensics game and it turned out to be a whole heck of a lot better than i have ever imagined it would be. I got the game around when it first came out i was just looking through the PC racks and there it was. I had no idea anything about it and never read any reviews, i just took it home.. (since thats what i do with all my games anyway) and it ended up being one of the BEST and scariest games i have ever played.

I'm a big horror fan but Condemned really didn't scare me at all after the first two levels. And I usually get very, very scared, very, very easily. But the best horror games in my opinion are Alien vs. Predator 2 and F.E.A.R.!

The first Silent Hill game was the first game to ever scare me, so I'll always give that honourable mention.

But for best scares, I have to namecheck Condemned and Fatal Frame. Currently playing Dead Space, and for my money, it's definitely up there, but I've only done the first 2 chapters so far. Need to play more.

When silent hill and Resident Evil 2 came out, they scared the hell outta me when i was 10. Games like Condemned, Dead Space and and the new silent hill aren't scary to me anymore, though they are some of my favorite games now. Not so much scary as really, really cool to me

that really creepy NES RPG that I don't remember the name of. It wasn't designed to be horrific or anything, it just was super creepy. Like, the sounds and the music and the landscapes and lack of explanation... just made it seem so so far away and mysterious.

5. Dead Space

4. Silent Hill

3. Doom 3

1. Resident Evil

RE4 was a great game, definately one of my favorites of all time, but not scary at all. I haven't played the Fatal Frame games, but will definately pick them up if I ever find them used (found them online for $40....no thanks).

The first Resident Evil doesn't scare now, but I was only around 7 or 8 when it first came out, and it traumatized me for a few years.

I don't really like horror games but resident evil 4 was definately not scary. The only thing "scary" was the chainsaw people and trying not to die, not really taht they were scary.

Dead Space makes you jump constantly. Manhunt scared the crap outta me a few times, but the Piggsy fight had me sweating. Other than that, I can't say any of those games were very scary. Bioshock had the dentist and Ravenholm was creepy the first time I played Half-Life 2, but.. eh. F.E.A.R. was not scary at all. I laughed and thought of The Ring every time, and of how far from frightening it was.

DeadSpace is very creepy (still playing)

Doom 3 for pc is probably the freakiest game i've ever played. the fact that its always pitch black and you only have your flash light really gets you jumping all the time.

As always any survival horror you play, i recommend playing with the lights out.

Am glad you included AVP2 (Great Game), I remember a part in the marine missions where you go into a sewer and its literally pitch black, all you have is a little shoulder lamp which runs out and you have to turn it off to recharge it. There are runner aliens coming at you out of the darkness. I'm not ashamed to say that scared the crap out of me.

Also Bioshock while not terrifying is very creepy and has jumpy bits where crazied zombie like people run and cream at you. Also amazing game great storyline (must buy)

Resident Evil remake and Resident Evil 4 as well F.E.A.R 1
