Report: GameSpot's Gerstmann Fired Due to Negative Kane & Lynch Review
by Chris Remo Nov 29, 2007 9:09pm CST Rumors have been swirling today that Jeff Gerstmann, executive editor at CNET-owned major video game site GameSpot, was fired after giving a generally unimpressed review of Io Interactive's Kane & Lynch: Dead Men. Gerstmann awarded the game a 6.0. [Edit: Gerstmann had particularly negative words in his video review, which was removed from the site by GameSpot today.] (Though Shacknews does not score its reviews, our own Kane & Lynch review was similar in its verdict.)According to the reports, the layoff came after Kane & Lynch publisher Eidos took issue with the review and threatened to pull its considerable ad contract. GameSpot's front page is currently almost entirely re-skinned with Kane & Lynch imagery.
The rumor began bouncing around various industry circles over the past day, and this evening was reported by Kotaku. Popular webcomic Penny Arcade posted a strip about the alleged incident tonight, outside of its normal publishing schedule.
Shacknews can confidently confirm via its own sources that Gerstmann was indeed fired yesterday from his position at GameSpot. The source declined to comment as to whether the firing was directly related to the reported Eidos situation, but the circumstances are suspicious at the least.
Gerstmann had been an employee at GameSpot for about a decade, and took the place of former executive editor Greg Kasavin when Kasavin left the company to work for Electronic Arts as a producer.
Update: CNET employee Tim Tracy has posted what appears to be a farewell notice on his GameSpot blog. Until July, Tracy was an editor at GameSpot, and since then has been working for CNET-owned MP3.com. If indeed Tracy is departing, it is unknown if it is related to Gerstmann's dismissal.

That's what Eidos has to do with it... They threatened to pull their entire advertisement contract with GS because of the negative review.
Well if the user's on this site would stop blowing this out of proportion then maybe that wouldnt happen... =0Shade-Blade
Whats eidos gotta do with this?GamingThief
Eidos paid to advertise Kane & Lynch on GameSpot. Apparently, they paid a LOT, and the game was HEAVILY advertised, to the point of saturation.
Editor Jeff Gerstmann gave the game a low score and tore it a new **** over the bugs. Eidos complained to GameSpot. GameSpot waited until all the other reviewers had submitted their reviews for the Fall games, then fired Jeff Gerstmann over his review of Kane & Lynch. They also removed Jeff Gerstmann's video review of the game from the site, because it was particularly harsh toward the game.
Gamers started posting poor reviews of the game, so GameSpot disabled user reviews for Kane & Lynch.
Eidos paid for a good review, but didn't get it.
I remember PC Gamer doing the same for Sierra and the Tribes 2 game. When released, it was so buggy it wouldn't install half the time, and you couldn't even play more than 15 minutes without an unhandled exception error crashing you to the Windows desktop. The magazine didn't mention the bugs, and gave the game a glowing review, because that's what Sierra's advertising dollars bought them.
The old PG Games and Strategy Plus magazine did the same for Halo, because Microsoft had paid big advertising dollars for positive reviews. When it was released, no PC on the planet could support its shader model or run the game at more than 30fps. Even with a brand-new, state-of-the-art machine, you had to turn everything down to keep the game from becoming a slide show. The magazines didn't mention any of this, because Microsoft had paid for good reviews.
Now that I know how GameSpot operates, I'll be removing the site from my browser. Obviously, their reviews can't be trusted, because they're going to write whatever the publishers pay them to write.
gamespot is just trying to cover Eiodos' ass.skatatayi think its the other way around, besides i just dont get how jeff got fired.. i mean did eiodos chairman file a lawsuit or something to get jeff fired?
Well if the user's on this site would stop blowing this out of proportion then maybe that wouldnt happen... =0Shade-BladeEXACTLY. I dont see why so many of you guys are "losing respect" for this website. Wow, I think that this isnt that big of a deal, except that he was a respected and great reviewer (based on other peoples words). I've seen games on here get terrible scores, and still keep their ad thing.

but edios wasnt going to keep their ads up.
and jeff got fired over the money deal gamespot had with edios.
if the site is going to give into ad money, what wont it do? this site lost its integrity.

Yeah, I know, Im saying that OTHER companys have, but EIDOS wont cuz It simply refuses to believe that its game sucks I agree with you, Glass Dominion, now, because if this website gives into this stuff, then, exactly what you said, what WONT they do? But I also dont think that we should say "this website should just be mindful which ads are running, and dont trust those reviews, just go to gametrailers for those. They have great reviews (but I like GS and GT's reviews the same) and the are long vid reviews, which is great, cuz I cant just hear about the gameplay, I have to see it. BUT at the same time as writing this, I realized that we shouldnt have to worry about which ads are running...GS should just bring back Jeff and forget the whole biased-reviews-cuz-these-guys-are-paying-us-money thing. 'Nuff said.[QUOTE="GlassDominion"]EXACTLY. I dont see why so many of you guys are "losing respect" for this website. 'Nuff said.the only problem with "check what ads are on the site" strategy is, money could also be passing under the table. gamespot as a company has shown its not up to the task of reviewing games the right way by firing jeff because they almost lost a contract, none of the reviews should be taken seriously.
