I was just wondering about this. Microsoft if phasing out the "fat" 360 and having the "slim" version as the only one avaliable. So in a few months when the slim model is the only one you can find, if your old 360 gets the rrod and you send it in, would Microsoft send you the slim model or just a refurbished fat one?

I sent my older 360 in for RRoD and they gave me a similar model (no HDMI port)...so i'm sure they'll send you back a refurbished one

Yeah when I sent back mine that I bought on release day about a year ago I was sure they were going to send me a newer version with an HDMI port. I didn't even get that. Apparently they have a billion refurbs sitting on shelves. Enough to make sure they never have to send you a slim for a replacement.

Common sense says Microsoft will have PLENTY of "Fat" 360 refurbs to send back to customers for the next few years.

If you sent back a standard Xbox 360, they tell you to keep your hard drive and faceplate. You get back a slim model.... your hard drive is incompatible. You would get your same system refurbished, no doubt. It just couldn't work.

Sorry, buddy, they've got whole warehouses full of refurbished 360s. You're not going to get a free upgrade.

Really the only way to get a chance at a free upgrade is if you bought the normal xbox 360 at Best Buy and got a replacement plan. If and when your Xbox 360 dies and if the only price equivalent model they have available is the Xbox 360 S then thats what you will probably get. That's a lot of "if"s though.

I'm gonna take my old car back to the dealer for recall/warranty repairs and see if they'll give me this years model instead. No, I doubt that will work.

Imagine how pissed off you would be if it worked out the other way around, so you sent in a 'Slim' xbox 360 and they sent you a 'Fat' one back... lol i would laugh so hard if that happened to someone else though! XD

Sounds like a good idea but when you think about it its a very bad idea. If they sent you a new xbox 360 S, you'll get just the console itself. Which means you would get no hard drive or the appropriate power cord to even get the thing running. So you would end up spending just as much finding those items as you would buying it new.
