NHL 09 and Rock Band 2 are two sequels that have been released recently.

Both have received rave reviews, yet are extremely similar to their iterations from last year.

What do you think? Will you be buying these despite the similarities to their previous iterations? Or will you pass and wait for more innovation and difference?

sorry buddy i gotta disagree, sure most games aren't vastly different from their prequels but they generally do change quite a bit: Take GOW2 for example looks very similar but alot of the elements of gameplay have changed. Im not really into Fable or NHL so can't offer an opinion.

The fallout series has had a massive overhaul if memory serves wasn't it like similar and i use that loosely to say Runescape in gameplay design??

Also what are you comparing Halo Wars too that doesn't have a prequel!!

Some can be, but i've noticed it's changed over time. For instance, every sequal to a Ratchet & Clank game are practically the same thing. Same goes with old time Crash Bandicoot , etc.

Now, sequals rae getting better. Now sports games will always have a similar feel.

I just beat Tales of Vesperia, and a Sequal would be sooooooo awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Great rpg, great great rpg.

For every person that wants change in a sequel there are the exact same amount that want it to stay the same. You can't win.

In the case of NHL 09, well it has changed, at least this "generation" of NHL titles. NHL 07 introduced the Skill Stick, NHL 08 added to it, upped the framerate and NHL 09 has refined the system even more adding more defensive play. Throw in the EASHL, Be A Pro, and adding custom audio to your team, you end up with a title that is vastly different.

The core mechanics NEED to stay in games like this, because that's what they are based around. How could you make drastic changes to a hockey game without destroying the game of hockey?

I could see RB changing more, but at the same time Harmonix's hands are tied because they pledged they wouldn't force people to have to change hardware, so they are stuck with what the first released. Now it is just about refinements and the games are all the better for it.

To similar? Sequels are spuppose to be more of what the original had. Thats the point of a sequel.

If you want somthing differen, play somthing different.

Ask yourself this, if the sequel is framatically different than the original than what the hell makes it a sequel? It has to say basically the same or its an entirely new game altogether.

exactly...

If Sonic 2 was more like mario and less like Sonic 1, I would've been pissed...

the whole point of a sequel is to continue the story, improve on all the faults(graphics, gameplay bug, etc.) of the original, and/or to add more features(co-op storymode, download content, customizeable characters, etc.)

Yeah, usually a sequel is supposed to continue a story (or if its a prequel, begin) and generally you do not want the game-play to change dramatically from the previous installment. Most of the EA Sports Series have stuck to the same general game-play ideas, tweaking some features along the way, and overall have been mostly successful. Fable 2 and Gears of War 2, I expect them to progress on their predecessor, but stick to the layout that made them what they are. I guess I would of liked for Rock Band 2 to bring some new ideas to the table, still a great game and I'm glad I bought it. It really depends on what the developers are shooting for, if they want to take the series in a whole new direction then game-play will probably alter, if they are looking to continue the series then it will probably remain very close to the formula of the previous.

well I would have to say, if you have a hit game you would want to advance the game but you dont want to change everything that made the game the game. so yes sequels tend to be similar, as they must appeal to the fan base.

I wouldn't want all games to be sequels because I like new ones but I definitely enjoy sequels.

For example, when I play games like gears I think- This game is virtually perfect, I just want more levels.

i know what your saying but, if you change a sequel too much people might hate it. sure its innovative but...i think the same thing has happened with me and the new PoP. i know it hasent came out yet but i guess thats another topic for another day...i'll keep a eye on it. as for sequels its name says it all, its not meant to be too dif. other wise it wouldnt be a sequel
