I've posted here a few times. Before I get to my question I'll describe myself as someone who's never really played xbox or 360, never played PS3, and currently own a PS2. I came to this site to try and make the right decision in choosing between 360 or PS3. I've realized that I'm not nearly as into video games as most of the posters here. I pretty much like consoles for Madden, shooters like Splinter Cell, and Grand Theft Auto. I still can't figure out what a fanboy is, but I get the feeling that I'll be interpretted as one. Honestly not the case.

Anyways, my question is this.

Considering the frequency of 360 problems I've read about on here, from 360 owners, and the fact that I haven't been able to find any info about the RROD problems being solved, why would someone who has neither system choose the 360 at this point? All things being equal, I'd rather get the 360 - a few buddies have it and it sounds like the online gaming is second to none. But as a consumer I can't justify buying a product that has so many quality/performance issues.

I'm not thrilled about the PS3 either, the game selection is lacking. But I've never had 1 problem with the PS2 I have, and from what I've read there are very few quality/performance issues.

Not trying to start a war, I'm really just hoping someone has some news about MS getting things figured out regarding this RROD nonsense.

Feel free to give feedback or move on to another post, thanks. I would have posted this on the PS3 forum but I think I'd just get people telling me that bad stuff about 360 and I've already heard that.

Thanks

Read the 100 other posts here about this. The RRoD isn't something that happens every time you boot up your console. It's not something everyone struggles with every day. I don't keep a towel by my console. Like I told someone else, I don't even think about it. And most people don't. But be assured that if it does happen to you, you are covered for 3 years by the MS warranty. So it's free to get it replaced. I honestly think it's all blown a little out of proportion. When you come to forums like this you see people complaining about it and read about a couple of bad experiences, but the majority of us are just happily gaming away. Don't let this hold you back from getting a 360. You say you like shooters and GTA IV? Well you won't be at a loss for shooters, and GTA IV is just a few months away. Plus Xbox Live is the best console online service out there.

Yep, seems you have to tread carefully in this forum to avoid offending people. The xbox 360 has had its fair share of bad press, yes. But, although it seems like one out of every 2 consoles is faulty, the figure is probably more like 1 in 5 or 1 in 8, its just you hear a LOT more about the faulty ones than the good ones. I just bought one myself and low and behold, the power brick is broken, however Im taking it back and it will probably cost me 2 hrs in lost time but I will get a new and hopefully good one that could lastme a year. So two hrs lost out of a year doesnt seem that bad! And the game catalogue for it is huge and generally excellant. Actually last night I had a bit of a rant about how disappointed i was with the system (and promptly got moderated eek) but after some sleep and a few less pints of beer I see that actually its a pretty good console. It might not be a robust or infallible as the ps3 but it more than makes up for it in charm and a gaming back catalogue second to none.

The 360 does have technical problems, but that shouldn't stop you from enjoying the best console (I speak out of experience since I also have a PS3 and had a Wii), there are so many high quality games and it has online capabilities that rival a PC's. I'm not sure about RROD anymore (since the introduction of the new motherboard). It really isn't a massive bother sending it back if it does break either, I just returned it to the store (Game (UK)) and one of my friend's returned it to MS and had it replaced within a week. It's the best system, don't miss out.

The problem is, when it does happen to some people, they are so hesitant to just send it in and get it replaced right away, that they come here and try every ghetto way to magically fix the problem. They just can't be without it for a week. Then they get more and more frustrated when the situation gets worse. It happened to me once and right then and there, I called MS. They sent me a box, I shipped it out a couple days later, and I got it back right away. From the moment it crashed to the time that UPS delivered my new console to my doorstep - 8 days. Big deal.

That doesn't sound too bad. I realize that some on here are a bit too nuts about this stuff. Does anyone know when they started using the new motherboard? Is it safe to assume that any console in that's currently in stores has it?

well....maybe you should wait another year or so until all three systems have smoe games out as the ps3 doesnt have many games yet....although it was the same with the 360, the first year there werent many games....but if your set on the 360, dont let the hardware problems influence you....your covered for 3 years....

In some cases, it can take a lot longer. My friend's xbox360 has had the RRoD and he called MS right away. They got a box shipped to him in like 3 days, but from there after he sent it, it took a month & a halffor it to come back. Also, as easy as you may think it is to do all this, it still is a hassle to have to send a product back because of it breaking down, especially since it is an expensive system. That being said, I would still recommend you go with a xbox360 over any other system, and believe me when I say I'm not biased toward the 360, I actually own all 3 systems. The PS3 is a good enough system itself, only problem is there isn't really a good library of games yet, but they are coming, you just have to be paitent.

I would recommend getting a xbox360 from best buy with their warranty. For an extra $40, u are covered for 4 years, if it dies on you for any reason just bring it back, and they will replace for you right there in the store, no hassle no wait. And you can swap out your hard drive and keep all your DLC and gamesaves
