Can someone who actually knows what the hell they are talking about help me out! Ive been having trouble connecting to XBOX LIVE. I bought an ethernet cable yesterday and gold membership connected it to my XBOX to my modem which is a motarola surf board(black with the green lights on) Tryed to connected to XBOX LI but didnt work. So I tried looking at tutorials and asking peo, some said I need a router to connect then some said they have connected straight from their XBOX to their modems and didnt need any router! Im pretty much a step from plucking the wires of my xbox like a chicken tbh.

So please I throw myself down help me out!

If you have connected thru the internet with your modem with a PC, you shouldn't have a problem. One thing you could try is unplugging the modem, waiting about 30 seconds, and then plugging it back in and see if that refreshes it at all. Also, double check the package from your ethernet cable you just purchased and make sure it is NOT a crossover/patch cable, just a regular straight-thru cable. A dead give-away is usually crossover/patch cables are red with yellow connections.

I actually had the same problem so i plugged mine into the actual PC tower. There should be a ethernet plug back there somewhere. To do it you have to create a LAN connection.Go to the start menu then go to control panel then Network connections. While your in Network connections look on the right for create new connection,Follow the instruction and you will have created it.Next bridge your highspeed connection to your LAN.Do this by clicking and draggind along both connections. While they are bot highlighted right click and go to bridge connections and then it should work fine.

Are you on AOL by any chance? I was on AOL and had the same modem. Long story short, Xbox Live doesnt work with AOL due to the need to have AOL software to sign in to connect which Xbox doesnt have.

Probably not, but hes not in America either. OK thats odd then. Im on virgin also but I didnt think they even gave out those modems. Only thing I can suggest is turn both the modem and Xbox off at the plug before connecting anything. Wait 30 seconds and then turn them back on. If you switch cables to/from computer to Xbox while the mode is turned on then it wont connect.

Also when everything is plugged in, do the connection test in the Xbox Network Settings to refresh everything.

I'd suggest ringing Virgin instead and getting them to send out a new modem for free. Just say your current one died or something and that way you get to keep both modems so can use whichever you prefer. Also they just send it in the post so theres no annoying guy that comes round to set it up.

Is the ethernet connection between your 360 and your router a patch cable or a crossover cable. Before you shoot me down it should be written on the cable sleeve. If you are connecting a pc/laptop/xbox etc to a router you require a PATCH cable. A CROSSOVER cable is for connecting pc/laptops to other pc/laptops. Its a simple solution/suggestion but quite easily overlooked! Hope you get it sorted

When did you get that modem because its old and has faults. Check your ethernet cable in another device like a pc to see if its a cable fault. Switch of modem, make sure network settings in xbox are blank , leave 360 switched on and switch on modem, if no work run network test on 360,if still dont work phone and ask for details that are asked for in xbox network settings and enter manuallly

Some modems are routers...But not all of them. Clearly yours is not. You need a router. I told you this yesterday, and nothing has changed since then. Modems themselves cannot distribute IP addresses properly, routers can. Some modems have routing capabilities, that's why some people CAN simply plug the cord into their modem and go. You cannot, so you need a router. The end.

Tc phoned a mate at virgin for ya If you change the device that is plugged into the cable modem then the new device won't be able to connect. To get the new device to work then you need to switch of the cable modem at the mains, leave for 30 secs or so and then restart. It will then accept a new MAC address. I think this dates back to when the services first started (TeleWesta and NTL) and they dictated that you could only have one device connected. When they installed, this would be your computer and its MAC address would be linked to the account. If you got a new computer then you would have to ring customer support to get them to use the new MAC address instead. This is why Cable Modems often have a setting for MAC spoofing whereas ADSl modems don't. Under pressure the companies relaxed and you can now change the devices yourself. But I think there is still a hang over that you need to power down the cable modem which clears the MAC address association. 1) Disconnect all devices from the modem 2) Power down the modem 3) Wait 30 secs or so 4) Power up the modem 5) Connect the XBox 6) Hopefully this should associate the XBox MAC with the account and allow you to connect.

YES! Do this. If it doesn't work then you will probably have to buy a router.

Instead of getting 'pised' off at a bunch of kids on the Gamespot forums, did you try customer service?

You have to unplug your modem's power and plug it back in after hooking it up to the 360. Your welcome.
