I kind of brought this on myself.. My xbox got the red ring a while ago and ive been dreading sending it in cuz i heard it takes 6 weeks or something (its still under warranty).. andI wanted to get some games that come out b4 then, so my brother suggestedi takeit appart and do it myself.. anyways.. i heard that replacing the thermal compound can solve the problem, and i had some arctic silver(good thermal compound)left over from my computer.. Long story short, i took it apart, cleaned off the old compound, put new compound on and put the 360 back together, "reset" the 360 and its still giving me the red rings... only now i cant send it to MS :( and this is my 3rd 360.... I have wii, but i hate it, and i have ps3 but i use that primarily for movies... im a much bigger 360 fan.. What to do..? are there any other "fixes" ppl know about? i want to play with my 360..

DO NOT TAKE IT APART YOURSELF it voids the warranty, and if you messes up, youre screwed and have to buy a new xbox. just send it in, seriously 1 month is not a long time, just find something else to do besides play games all day dude... seriously theres more to life. but i hope you take my advice. otherwise youre out 200++ bucks

lol well people need to not make dumb decisions, really. because theyd rather spend 300 bucks on a brand new console they already have than to wait a little bit to get it fixed to brand new... for free! i dont see their logic.. i cant see the desperation many people have with video games... and cant wait a few weeks. maybe less.

Its the fact that ive been through the process 2 times prior to this. And that i read up on fixing it and alot of pplhad success...It was a gamble that i took and lost...

You cracked the case so the RROD warranty is void. There are resources out there to fix it yourself and most game shops will do it for $50 by adding heatsyncs and such. What happens, the solder connections break due to the expansion and contraction from heat. You can temporarily fix it with the towel trick but this could end up breaking it. Get the new heatsync and use a heat gun to melt the solder back into place is your best bet for a do it yourself.

The instructions on installing the new heatsync are here... http://www.youtube.com/watch%3fv=7gzeCOc61iY You can buy it here.... http://www.consolesource.com/ecomm/_search.php?is_hc=Y&page=1&q=clamp Now, I have not done this and you will have to do this at your own risk. There is nothing wrong with adding this device because it is like putting a new heatsync on your computer CPU. I don't know why the guy below was worrying about getting modded because you own the hardware and this has nothing to do with any illegal activity.

Really depends on where you are from and where you went to school, is has been referred to and accepted as both in the industry. Similar to trouble-shooting, trouble shooting, and troubleshooting. Our engineers call it a heat sync. Here is an example... http://www.compuvest.com/Desc.jsp;jsessionid=aqEiRSYJ15MhZ6an1i?iid=1027269

You should have researched that online more. That fix only works half the time and only for a short time.Your out of an Xbox and theres nothing you can do but buy another one. BTW it took my system two weeks to come back from repairs not six.

I'm still pretty sure it's Heatsink. As it's a "sink"... and not a synchronization...

"I rarely play video games.. im just an impatient person." ... This is an oxymoron. I don't play much but I couldn't wait to play... That doesn't make any sense especially since it would have been fixed for free. I guess you like wasting money, or you didn't dish out the doe for it in the first place???

No need to start sounding rude. The guy just wants to play his game system and hates sending it off and waiting for the ups truck. It sucks bad as I went through it five times before I said enough and fix my own.

Didn't you read the sticker before you took it apart? Sorry to say but that there voids the warranty, meaning you won't get your 360 repaired. Situation boils down to one thing, you'll have to buy a new one.

Yes anything that has to do with taking your 360 apart voids the warranty.

my friend has basicaly pimped his xbox. he puts rapid fire in neons and mods up his xbox (such as fans). his fan in the xbox has blue neons along with his rapid fire pads and the light on the power button in the front. still i dont want it dont to my xbox because i like the green lights + i dont have to change the lights in things for everything i buy, but wen modern warfare 2 comes out im gettting a rapid fire chip and having that installed. my point is wen he gets red ring (which is only a matter of time) hes done all that for nothing.

What ring of death? There's 4 of them, just watch a video on youtube or google it. If those don't work then go to the xbox site on customer support, because they have some solution that might have a slight that it may work. If it's a overheat then next get a fan (don't use it too much or it'll freeze), but another question is what xbox do you have? For me I have an elite so I really don't need worry about freezing or overheat, if nothing works at all. Then try going to gamestop or a person that fixes video game systems, I used to remember that my uncle fixed my game cube when it broke but he lives too far lol. If they can't fix it then just get $200 (if you have the money) and take it to microsoft if the situation is taht bad then they'll give you a better version of the xbox like an elite.

Tip: Never take your xbox apart, you'll make it worse or you'll break it even more. I tried that to my playstation 2 and it doesn't work anymore (until I took it to sony).
